What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite awesome special effects, Hollow Man falls short of other films directed by Paul Verhoeven. This flick over time degenerates into a typical horror film.

Anton Bitel Little White Lies the director keeps uncomfortably aligning the invisible cinemagoer's intrinsic voyeurism with Sebastian's own, showing us to what depths of depravity the male gaze can lead. May 27, 2019 Full Review Globe and Mail Rated: 2/4 Mar 19, 2002 Full Review Susan Stark Detroit News Rated: 2/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Chuck Klosterman Akron Beacon Journal Verhoeven's work is always fun to look at it. What's far shoddier is the story itself; it starts poorly and grows progressively worse, finally collapsing into an ending that is so laughably dreadful that I don't want to ruin it. Rated: 2/4 Oct 27, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review [The movie] contains none of the brains or thoughtful dimensions that audiences have come to expect from Verhoeven’s visceral-yet-witty brand of cinema. Rated: 2/4 Aug 18, 2022 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The "invisible man" idea isn't new, but the graphic nature of this film is certainly a deviously curious twist. Fonemao Wu good movie, good special effects, good directing good action sequences. Nothing about this movie dissapoints me! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/21/24 Full Review Dan R 2000's 'Hollow Man' really set the standard for CGI effects for films of its era and was maybe Sony's first look at creating its own 'monsterverse'. SYNOPSIS: 'A brilliant scientist's discovery renders him invisible, but transforms him into an omnipotent, dangerous megalomaniac.' This film really is about two things: the CGI effects and Kevin Bacon's performance as the film's unhinged antagonist. Otherwise 'Hollow Man' does fall short of other films from director Verhoeven. It feels like he wanted to create a sci-fi movie but eventually ended up with something more along the lines of a horror movie. It's not a bad film but it could've been better in terms of its storyline. Instead we're dazzled with incredible effects and well laid performances from its cast, especially Bacon who goes full on crazy. It's a gory film, so probably not for the squeamish, but the internal body scenes are clearly needed for a film about an invisible man and transformation. It's a big budget popcorn pleaser of a film. 7/10 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/24 Full Review Sparky K This is a great film, don't understand all the negative reviews! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/24 Full Review Kenziee the movie idea was good but the part with him being invisible and sexually assaulting women is disgusting. he was a nasty pervert that got the ending he deserved though! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/17/23 Full Review Joe M Good concept bad execution. Never once did a care for any of the characters and their was zero suspense.
