What to Know

Critics Consensus

Kevin Costner doesn't lack for ambition as he sketches this frontier saga across the widest of canvases, but Horizon's first chapter proves too diffuse in scope for it to satisfy as a self-contained endeavor.

Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review By the end of it, you're still waiting for the story to start... It never giddies up. It just sits there. Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) This is the kind of handsome, well-nourished film-making that looks an absolute treat up on the screen, but is about as authentically Old West as a set of dental veneers. Still, it’s not uninvolving. Rated: 3/5 Jul 1, 2024 Full Review Aja Romano Vox It wouldn’t be an American dream if it weren’t giant, over the top, and fueled less by reason than by sentiment. Jul 1, 2024 Full Review Stephen Silver Splice Today it’s uneven, disjointed, and confused about history, the West, or anything else Rated: 2/5 Jul 5, 2024 Full Review Armond White National Review A punishingly long, TV-style Western epic that both oversimplifies and overcomplicates the history of the expansion of the North American continent. Jul 5, 2024 Full Review Robert Roten Laramie Movie Scope There is some good acting, and interesting characters are developed that are worth following in the films to come. I found the story compelling enough to want to find out what happens with these characters. Rated: C+ Jul 5, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Lyle T Great western! Can't wait for the next ones!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review John P The movie is much more engaging than the "experts" suggest. Beautiful vistas, interesting relationships woven through the film, and a number of tense, thrilling moments. 3+ hours flew by. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review James Dickens II Excellent story/saga of the reality of West as it was in the mid 1800s. Storylines, cast,, locations and vision was excellent. This film really made you feel and envision what it was like or may have been like at that time. Well done Costner! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review pshootr This being the first in a series of stories sets the stage and introduces a huge cast of characters for the remainder of the story. There is a lot to take in and process. Almost too much. The cinematography is outstanding. Beautiful vistas, ragged settlements, the best and the most treacherous of the 1880s. Acting is superb. Characters of all ilks that you will love, hate and fear. A lot to absorb in 3 hours, but I want to see the next episodes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Eric Three hours of awful!! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review D2 Just an old western where the Indians are always the bad guys. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
