What to Know

Critics Consensus

While Ang Lee's ambitious film earns marks for style and an attempt at dramatic depth, there's ultimately too much talking and not enough smashing.

Chris Bennion Times (UK) Lee’s take on Bruce Banner — the scientist you won’t like when he’s angry (played by Eric Bana) — stands up rather well as a counterpoint to today’s CGI-drenched behemoths. Apr 10, 2024 Full Review Joshua Rothkopf In These Times I ask you: Is this not the correct way, the honorable way, for a studio to spend $150 million of its summer capital? Universal said The Hulk, and Lee heard something else, perhaps a story of dysfunctional families torn apart by ambition. Mar 16, 2020 Full Review Namrata Joshi Outlook Even if Lee would have wanted to rise above the simple two-dimensional universe of the comic books, his portrayal remains just as flat. Rated: 2/4 Jan 4, 2019 Full Review Joseph Garcia Dynamic Duel Podcast The film's artistic ambition, psychological explorations, and fun action get largely lost in its unnecessarily long runtime and unconventional editing style. Rated: 3/5 Mar 6, 2024 Full Review David Reddish MovieWeb For audiences ever fatigued by superhero movies cranked out like fast food, Hulk tastes like gourmet cuisine. Time has been kind to Hulk. Today, a movie often cited as one of the worst of its genre plays a lot more like one of the best. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 30, 2023 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Hulk has long been a misunderstood film but it's a very different type of comic book movie and should be reappraised as such. Sergio R Overloaded action movies fans will find this movie boring. That's because that kind of people have limited brains. This is the best of al 21st Century HULK movies. Best story, best cast, best director, period! Obviously, it is NOT PERFECT, but Only true cinephiles will agree it is a very, very good movie on its genre! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/24/24 Full Review Brayden B I found this movie very enjoyable. Sure it is long and sometimes boring. But all that is made up with great action sequences. Also loved the portrayal of the Hulk Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/17/24 Full Review Michael S Went in with low expectations, so I was surprised at this not being a total train wreck. Enjoyed the action scenes and the stylistic choices (split panels, wipes, slide transitions). A little too slow to get going and a little to dialogue heavy at times. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review matthias s As a fan of the Hulk comics, I approached Ang Lee's 2003 "Hulk" with very low expectations. The film turned out to be a mixed bag, earning a middling 2.5 stars from me. The CGI Hulk, while ambitious for its time, often looks cartoonish and detracts from the character’s intended menace. Eric Bana's portrayal of Bruce Banner feels flat, lacking the emotional depth needed to truly connect with the audience. However, Jennifer Connelly as Betty Ross is a highlight, bringing genuine warmth and complexity to her role. Her performance adds much-needed emotional weight and is a rare bright spot in an otherwise uneven movie. Surprisingly, I find myself appreciating "Hulk" a bit more now that I’m older. The film’s exploration of psychological themes and its unique, comic book-like editing style have grown on me. It’s not the Hulk smash hit I wanted, but there are moments worth revisiting. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/02/24 Full Review Jhoan D This film is really cool, it shows other powers of the Hulk besides strength and growth factor, it also explores the psychology of the banner a lot, it really is the most faithful Hulk in the comics! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/28/24 Full Review Prabudhjeet A The score fits perfect for bruce banner's hulk persona. Eric Bana did an amazing job at capturing bruce and hulk. And director Ang Lee's, split screen framing makes the transition feel as if turning the pages of comic. Although colour pallet was dark, specially in some fight scenes, which didn't paid of that well. Compared to CGI's in today's movies, these were and still are ahead of today Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews
