What to Know

Critics Consensus

While John Carter looks terrific and delivers its share of pulpy thrills, it also suffers from uneven pacing and occasionally incomprehensible plotting and characterization.

J. Hoberman ARTINFO.com For the most part, the first "live action" feature by Andrew Stanton, is graphically splendiferous and enjoyably nonsensical. Feb 25, 2019 Full Review Matt Singer ScreenCrush Isn't the disaster some industry observers predicted, but it's not the high-gloss masterpiece some of us hoped for either. Rated: 5/10 Apr 5, 2012 Full Review David Denby New Yorker A mess. Mar 26, 2012 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review It’s watchable and, at times, an enjoyable film, just not wowing or immediately satisfying in the way so many of Burroughs’ readers had hoped it would be. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 22, 2023 Full Review David Bax Battleship Pretension John Carter is a good summer movie in March but, with the exception of that one fleeting segment, it's not a great movie at any time of year. Audience Member If Clint Eastwood and George Lucas had a baby it would be this movie. Western meets sci-fi. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review ned k absolutely loved it, great concept , Lynn Collins is abosolutely gorgeous in this, John getting a slap around the ears..classic..Woola hysterical..wheres the sequels? Cmon man Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/24/24 Full Review Dale R Based on the book Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs and is about a post-civil war Confederate cavalryman that accidentally ends up on Mars and ends up mediating the warring factions there. The special effects in this film are great, there are a few moments where you can tell a non-human character isn’t interacting correctly, but mostly a great spectacle of a film. The last third of the movie seemed to drag on to me and I found myself losing interest. Michael Giacchino’s score is good, but not that memorable for me. There aren’t any stand outs in the acting department either, but the script didn’t really call for any deep character moments. Check it out if you are curious. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Sean H This is an excellent sci-fi fantasy movie that the whole family can enjoy. I've watched it with my kids several times and find myself coming back to it again and again. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review marko l Really great movie and absolutely under rated . Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/22/24 Full Review Yamaha M I didnt read the books so i'm purely judging the movie. I really liked it, it was fresh and original, not like other movies and definitely worth watching. To bad part 2 was cancelled.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews
