tony h The narrative in the background for this film, just as the film itself, most certainly demands close attention. Many will be uncomfortable to have to admit the reality of what that narrative seeks to reveal, and so will turn away. For those who choose to pay attention, the effort proves to be well worth it. I started watching the movie and within the first five minutes I felt like it was moving way too quickly. Prepare for that to be a theme throughout the entire movie, it moves way too quickly. There's not enough development between characters so you don't really dislike or like anybody strongly enough to understand their words or their opinions. The reason I had high hopes is because you don't see often enough black actors in the entirety of the film, meaning you don't see enough black actors in the entire film as the main cast. On average they just play the side character, the best friend or the comic relief. In this one I was hoping for a good storyline that is often portrayed in romance comedies where white actors are the main theme. It's not that the story was bad it was just that they focused on such minuscule things versus things they could've used to create a bigger plot point, more drama. Her parents not being her parents and her aunt being her mom could've been a huge plot point. But they decided to focus on the future husband‘s mom as a large issue when she could've just been a small issue throughout the film and still revealed the secret. All the small things they decided to focus on takes away from that huge reveal. I feel no sympathy towards the main female because throughout the film she seems to push back for no reason as well as the mother in law seems to push back for no reason. All in all, I would not watch the movie again but it was not unwatchable. The writing and direction of the film needs to improve but the actors were good. I grew up in Brooklyn, married my wife after 4 months, we were different religions and both mothers said hurtful things to us. So I had a lot in common with this movie. It does have a lot of characters, too many to develop fully, but it was like a real wedding, lots of people you barely know. It's a comedy, not a documentary.
