Two-bit crook Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.) stumbles into an audition for a mystery film while on the run from the cops. Winning the part, he lands in Hollywood, where he's flung into a tangled, murderous conspiracy with his childhood sweetheart, Harmony Lane (Michelle Monaghan), and hard-boiled private eye Perry van Shrike (Val Kilmer). This deadpan, affectionate parody of film noir tropes is named for film critic Pauline Kael's influential 1968 collection of film reviews and essays. Read More Read Less

Christopher Orr The Atlantic The plot of the film is almost willfully convoluted. But it's also largely beside the point, an excuse for quite a few good scenes, most of them equal parts homage and subversion. Dec 14, 2014 Full Review Wendy Ide Times (UK) A sarky, sniping film noir homage that assassinates the character of every LA archetype you could imagine. Dec 14, 2014 Full Review Philippa Hawker The Age (Australia) A self-referential noir-screwball-action movie that never wears out its welcome -- although it delights in taking that risk, over and over again. Rated: 4/5 Dec 14, 2014 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Although the novelty of a protagonist whos aware hes in a noir thriller grows tiresome, the comic banter between Downey Jr. and Kilmer remains priceless for much of the film. Rated: 3/4 Apr 15, 2022 Full Review Jason Shawhan Nashville Scene Funny, violent, smart and pitched perfectly to anyone who wants their own sun-blasted dirtbag Christmas mystery, this could be your It's A Wonderful Life. Sep 10, 2021 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Self-aware, making plenty of nods to its existence both as a mere movie and as something outside the strictly defined realm of invention, it's fortunately never overbearing. Audience Member A movie about friendship 😂 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/06/24 Full Review Alec C This film duo puts the "un" in unlikely comedic pairing! Small time crook Harry Lockhart and P.I. Perry van Shrike are thrust into an unlikely investigation when a face from Harry's past asks for help, which leads into a conspiracy that leads to plenty of death. Deadpan as you can get and parodying every noir stereotype you can think of, this is one of those crime comedies you can't get enough of! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Junio S MY FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MOVIE Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Snuggly Too much talking. A pretentious, confusing mess of a movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/02/24 Full Review Jay H It should have been a hit. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/17/23 Full Review Lesterberne T I think it's outrageous how this movie has higher rantings than its successor The Nice Guys. This is a step down in believability, in the flow of the jokes compared to the seriousness of the situation, in the characters and in the mystery. Still an enjoyable watch but I would watch The Nice Guys probably 10 times before I consider watching this one. The director polished his work over the years and it shows.
