What to Know

Critics Consensus

Live Free or Die Hard may be preposterous, but it's an efficient, action-packed summer popcorn flick with thrilling stunts and a commanding performance by Bruce Willis. Fans of the previous Die Hard films will not be disappointed.

David Ansen Newsweek But ultimately it's [Bruce] Willis who makes this loopy action movie so endearing...Nobody dies it better. Feb 6, 2018 Full Review Kim Newman Sight & Sound Though it's mostly entertaining (if overlong), there is a sense that the whole thing has become somewhat rote. Jun 18, 2012 Full Review Ben Walters Time Out Len Wiseman handles many of the set-pieces with flair and tension. John McClane doesn’t always feel like the McClane we know and love, director Len Wiseman does such a wonderful job orchestrating bravado shootouts, fights, and chases that our most basic entertainment needs are met. Audience Member Over 15 years old and this proves to be the best installment of the series next to the original. After a 12 year hiatus Bruce Willis still kills it as detective John McClain. New director Len Wiseman steps into the reigns this time around bringing newcomers Justin Long, Mary Elizabeth-Winstead, Timothy Olyphant, and Maggie Q. A series of unexplained deaths occur with several computer geniuses. The one behind it all is Thomas Gabriel; he used to work with the US Department of Defense saying the country was open to attack (the infrastructure could be dismantled but when he was shut down he decided to do it himself to prove it) He was then discredited and now he’s officially tearing it down as a ‘fire sale’ targeting America’s infrastructure by hitting the transit system, telecommunications, knocking down the stock market, and stealing the money from the social security administration. The only one who can stop him is McClaine and survivor computer wiz Matt Farrell. McClaine also has an estranged relationship with his daughter Lucy. She gets caught up in the mix and now McClaine has to save her while thwarting Gabriel’s team. The movie is good old fashioned summer popcorn entertainment having action and explosions galore. They hold a lot of excitement and visceral weight. It also shows a terrifying look at a real-world scenario where our country is vulnerable to a cyber warfare attack potentially damaging all of our important data. It feels so relevant in our post 9/11 era of cyber terrorism. This definitely feels like a return to form for the franchise after part 3 seemed underwhelming (not awful but didn’t hold a candle to parts 1 and 2) The script covers much of our anxieties following 9/11 and questioning the true nature of the media asking if it’s manipulated to keep us in fear. Some of it seems preposterous but thankfully the summer thrills deliver in a digital age with an old school cop uses old school tactics to get the job done. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/19/24 Full Review Dani G Just another Die Hard movie Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/16/24 Full Review Audience Member Live Free Or Die Hard PG-13 (nudity and killing) - Action and mystery Action Police Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/15/24 Full Review Rick M More and more absurd and ridiculous by the minute. But for action, a good distraction. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/04/24 Full Review Aeph V It feels epic. Some action is over the top, like most of it, actually all of it but it is very well executed. And there is something about villain that can just trick F-35 pilot into attacking the protagonist. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/24 Full Review Read all reviews
