Cesar R Production value wise the movie is great. The problem is that it’s a collection of tired cliche after tired cliche. For a movie so clearly inspired by studio Ghibli it offers nothing new and, ironically, very little magic. This has some of the same delightful, surreal, abstract hand animation we saw in Ponyo, which I and others consider among the best of Miyazaki's features. This is Harry Potter Ghibli style, except it's also a cautionary tale about the attractive glamour and underlying dangers of dabbling in the occult. Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely. Also unusual here for children's anime is the lack of most background music. This lack forefronts the main character, her motivations and her choices in a wonderful way. The second movie by this Studio Ghibli spin-off, The Imaginary, has even more ambitious animation and a fresher feel. The character designs and focus could be significantly improved, much like those found in Studio Ghibli films. However, the movie lacks its own unique charm, making it feel like an imitation rather than an authentic work. The animation is another area that requires substantial improvement. While some scenes in the second half are visually stunning, the overall quality is subpar. The story, although interesting, is not effectively conveyed through the use of music, direction, and character designs. This lack of cohesion results in a movie that fails to connect with the main character on an emotional level, instead feeling like a third-person perspective until the second half. To elevate the movie, the creators should focus on developing the characters, refining the animation, and using music and direction to create a distinct charm. By doing so, the film could potentially become a memorable and engaging experience for viewers. But when Mary takes flight the plot is quickly lost in the hodgepodge of needless story tropes, homages to other (better) ideas, and weird contrivances (what happened to all of the students of this knockoff Hogwarts when the animals run amok?? and why is our villain so easily forgiven for abducting a little boy?) The films brisk pace allows this nonsense to be tolerable but my goodwill ended during the broom stable scene.
