Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader Pier Paolo Pasolini's disappointing 1970 version of the Greek tragedy. Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Scott Nye Battleship Pretension Pasolini frequently uses those who push themselves to the margins of society to expose our collective and individual weaknesses, and our determination to maintain the image of order. Jun 29, 2023 Full Review James Plath Movie Metropolis Only for an art-house audience, but those who want to feel and poetically experience the ancient world might also find this odd film worth watching, at least once. william k Operatic interpretation of Euripides' play focused on the revenge story is fascinatingly staged in historic locations and garbs, but is clearly observed by a modern-day viewpoint. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member An outstanding, haunting, beautiful movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review walter m If you're a beginner to this ancient Greek tragedy about betrayal and revenge, then Pier Paolo Pasolini's abstract version really is not the place to start.(As strange as it may sound Lars von Trier's version is better suited for the beginner.) But that's not to say there are not rewards here for the adventurous filmgoer, namely the great Maria Callas in the lead. So, while I did have a sense of deja-vu from watching this(namely because of Pasolini's "Oedipus Rex" not being that stylistically dissimilar), I thought it was interesting how his version of ancient Greece almost resembled another planet through a great use of locations. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member You can take the girl outta the ghetto but not the ghetto outta the girl. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member a strange and compelling film - genuinely capturing something of the 'otherness' of the ancient world - visually beautiful - and having as a soundtrack tibetan ritual music, Bulgarian and Japanese folk singing - that you might not think would work, but it does... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member An oddity worth seeing for Callas. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
