What to Know

Critics Consensus

Carried by Lily Sullivan's outstanding lead performance and enriched by an expertly administered sense of creeping claustrophobia, Monolith is an eerie thriller that burns slow and lingers.

Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News An industrious indie that defies its genre conventions every step of the way. Rated: 3/4 Feb 28, 2024 Full Review Phil Hoad Guardian Matt Vesely’s impressive debut ably stakes out its own territory, not least in the vast distances covered by a single on-screen actor and a handful of vocal performances. Rated: 4/5 Feb 20, 2024 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com In the end, the goal was clearly to trap us in the increasingly fractured mind of a single person who increasingly believes what is beyond believable. Mission accomplished. Rated: 3/4 Feb 16, 2024 Full Review Hernán Ferreirós La Nación (Argentina) Just as 2001 pondered upon humanity's place within the cosmos, this film pursues a no less elusive problem: the place of truth in the age of digital media. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Jun 10, 2024 Full Review Kat Halstead Common Sense Media The only actor on-screen for the entire 94-minute runtime, Sullivan impresses as a disgraced journalist looking for redemption via an eerie unexplained mystery in this psychological sci-fi film May 20, 2024 Full Review Ian Bunting Daily Record (UK) At its best Monolith is a tight, taut time showcasing a wonderful one-woman show from Sullivan, but could’ve done with a more crackling climax. Sal D Simple but yet effective thriller….third act could have had a bit tighter direction and less scrambled plot line - perhaps the ambiguity was intentional but it is too amorphous to get to a 4 star rating. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/29/24 Full Review Cody N The plot of the movie had a decent beginning, but slowly turned into a confusing mess of characters and storyline. The idea was a possibility, but it was executed poorly, almost as if it was rushed after the second half. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Lou P When it comes to horror and sci fi films, I almost always defer to the audience reviews. Monolith has broken this trend. The critics are spot on as this gem of a movie craftly builds up the tension to a creepy and chilling ending. Monolith is a clever piece of minalimistic film making that I could not take my eyes off of. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/17/24 Full Review Steven t Minimalistic and paranoid is this story in a nutshell. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/17/24 Full Review Chris C This was amazing for the first 80%, I was all in, but then they couldn't figure out what the story was, or how to wrap this up in any type of cohesive way, it was obtuse and then was just over, with no climax or explanation of any kind. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/14/24 Full Review Audience Member Started out great with a very unique plot, however it really frayed out by the third act and lost its steam. Hated the ambiguous ending.
