Stephen Romei The Australian This is a psychological drama that provides no easy answers. It uses the Rashomon effect to repeat scenes from different and often contradictory viewpoints. Rated: 3.5/5 May 17, 2024 Full Review Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) It would take a hard heart not to be moved by the finale of Monster, and the whole film is a pleasure to watch if you have the patience. Afterwards, though, you might find yourself wondering if so many plot contrivances were really needed. Rated: 3/5 May 9, 2024 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) If there are monsters in the story, they're never the monsters that you think they are... Mar 19, 2024 Full Review Calum Cooper Flick Feast The score tinges the beautifully shot cinematography with a hidden melancholy, which bubbles to the surface and transforms into something new as the narrative’s twists unravel and uncover the different dimensions to the characters driving the story. Jul 19, 2024 Full Review Ankit Ojha Cinema Elite “Monster” uses its “Rashomon”-esque narrative style not as a party trick or gimmick but as a social exercise that pushes its viewers to examine the boundaries of their own empathy with every consequent perspective of the recurring timeline of events. Rated: 5/5 Jul 9, 2024 Full Review Pablo O. Scholz Clarín It is the first time Kore-eda doesn't direct his own script. Still, family relationships and their connections are present in this film that adds one mystery after another. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/4 Jun 17, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Justin S A beautifully shot movie showing the different perceptions of the three different perspectives from which the story is told. From anger to sadness to compassion to relief. A film in which to judge not until you judge yourself. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Audience Member Possibly the best film I’ve seen in some time. The stories weave together in the most beautiful, intelligent way. Just like the assumption that many of the characters are monsters when we first encounter them, the film begins as something sad and unsettling and slowly progresses into something beautiful and optimistic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/25/24 Full Review Sue L Such a wonderful film I am literally lost for words, all I can say is I would recommend watching it I’m certainly glad I did Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/25/24 Full Review Salman S i just want to say one word about this movie: BEAUTIFUL Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Kevin L Yet again, director Hirokazu Kore-eda delivers a sharp, intricate story with the delicate, assured hand of a master; including editing. The non-linear structure works especially well. Viewers are expected to develop opinions on key characters and their questionable relationships, taking sides for or against the victims and the 'monsters'. So by telling so much from just the side of adult to child abuse for much of the movie, we don't see what is ultimately happening in the lives of these very people who we've already formed some likely strong stance for or against. If this style of storytelling/film making hurts your brain, or just makes your sphincter even tighter, then please pass on "Monster", and any other movie with 'non-linear' in the general description. Great job in casting for the movie. The main adult parts are all handled convincingly. It's the two child parts of Saori and Yori that stood out most for me. Young actors Ando and Hiiragi are tremendous. Great backing music by Sakamoto, per usual. Manners may maketh the man, as is said. But intolerance, not paying for one's trangressions, and bullying maketh the monster. 3.8 stars Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Rivaldi O My favourite movie all the time Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
