On the Count of Three

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's occasionally uneven, but On the Count of Three finds director/star Jerrod Carmichael attempting an ambitious blend of drama and dark comedy -- and often succeeding.

Dylan Roth Observer Simultaneously funny, depressing, and life-affirming, On the Count of Three isn’t a macabre masterpiece like, say, Barry, but it scratches a similar itch. Dec 14, 2022 Full Review David Stratton The Australian Very well acted, with a refreshingly dark sense of humour and briskly paced, the film impresses on a number of levels. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 6, 2022 Full Review Oliver Jones Observer Comfort has never felt more discomforting than it does in On the Count of Three, a profound new comedy about suicide, mental health, depression, and the absurd lengths we go to help the strange people we love. Rated: 4/4 May 16, 2022 Full Review Brittany Patrice Witherspoon Pop Culture Reviews Jerrod Carmichael has found his niche in On the Count of Three. He takes this script with confidence and quite frankly, directs the hell out of it. Rated: 4/5 Jul 15, 2024 Full Review Tina Kakadelis Beyond the Cinerama Dome On the Count of Three has a number of interesting ideas at play. While the film doesn’t always work, the performances of Carmichael and Abbott are enough to see it through to the end. May 23, 2024 Full Review Maxance Vincent InSession Film On the Count of Three is nothing more than a superficial character drama with some neat 35mm cinematography... Cynthia Good movie, kind of heavy Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/16/22 Full Review Peter It was verrrrry well done and both leading actors killed it - no pun intended 😱😂 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/15/22 Full Review Monique Loved this movie from start to finish. It is no Hollywood bang bang type of movie but what a great story of love, brotherhood and friendship as well as redemption. I thought this movie was amazing. Loved the noir feel of it peppered with fantastic subtle comedy and even surprise appearances by Tiffany Haddish and Henry Winkler. The only flaw was it was too short. I couldve watched this story unfold all day long. Great performances by the two leading characters. Appreciated the references to race relations and acceptance. This movie goes to show you - you never know what is going on with your neighbor, the person in line at the store next to you or even your own family members. Treat people with kindness as you do not know their circumstances. Great directing debut for Jerrod Carmichael! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/14/22 Full Review Aiden X A dark, yet comedic movie focused around friendship and suicide. An amazing film Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review donn It's a type of movie that you think will end happily but it doesn't, in a way that you wouldn't expect. It's the kind of movie where you sit in silence as the credits roll, just processing. Been a while since a movie has made me feel like this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/04/23 Full Review Mark T This is a dark comedy that focuses on depression and what it feels like to be so sad in the head that the only thing that can make you smile thought of not waking up the next morning. Something we all have felt to some degree at least once in our lives. But this film focuses on two best friends that feel this everyday. Although deeply depressed they both will make you laugh. It's easy to only see the sadness in this film but I was more focused on the love these two had for each other. There is literally nothing they wouldn't do for their best friend. They were just too blinded by their own depression that they couldn't see they had something beautiful to live for right in front of their face. Normally I am less serious in my reviews but something about this film makes me not want to joke, even though I was positively moved. The actors looked lost, soulless. You could feel their sadness to the point you start to think they actually should kill themselves. But then you see their inspiring bond and you hope they change their mind. This movie motivated me to stop and smell the roses more often. As well as to start using scenes from the movies I watch rather than the movie poster.
