What to Know

Critics Consensus

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines takes half-hearted stabs at expanding the world of Stephen King's original story, but they're largely lost in a substandard story that mistakes bland gore for effective horror.

Brian Lowry CNN.com A crisp and efficient reminder of King’s line “Sometimes, dead is better,” and that occasionally, sometimes prequels are too. Rated: 2/5 Oct 5, 2023 Full Review Brian Costello Common Sense Media As movies based on or inspired by the worlds and characters depicted in Stephen King's vast bibliography, it's by no means the worst, but it's also nowhere near the best. Rated: 2/5 Nov 30, 2023 Full Review Jorge Loser Espinof While not essential, Bloodlines is an interesting appendix for lovers of the novel... written with some knowledge and curiosity for the backstory of one of the best modern American horror novels. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Nov 1, 2023 Full Review Patrick McDonald WBGR-FM (93.7 FM - Monroe, WI) I'm not a horror guy, but I felt this was in the Stephen King spirit ... it will resonate with his fans. Paralleling it with the Vietnam War was decent symbolism. What does it say when the Peace Corp guy can't leave? Plus Henry Thomas does a King homage. Karen M This couldn't be much worse. Without a backstory it's a disjointed mess. With a "backstory" it's worse, seemingly replacing every element of the mythos King created with some unidentifiable story which doesn't fit. Zombies who murder and infect and multiply? Crandall bloodlines going back centuries in a web of supernatural brotherhood? Save yourself!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Korra N This prequel to 2019's Pet Sematary is one of the most unnecessary films ever made. A prequel could've worked, had they bothered to focus on real likable characters instead of cardboard cutouts, unnerving tension instead of cheap scares, and a plot that not only makes sense in the grand scheme of Stephen King's world, but has impact. Bloodlines does nothing great or worthwhile, save for brief shining moments with David Duchovny's Bill, but his performance doesn't save this film. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review stephen b When did this even come out? Was it straight to TV? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review SkyRo P "Pet Sematary Bloodlines" was a film that struggled to take flight, blending horror and reality in a way that seemed more comedic than frightening. It appeared to be an attempt to capitalize on the franchise's history, but ultimately fell short. The cast, comprised mostly of unknown actors, failed to engage viewers, with Norma being the only standout for her acting skills. As the film progressed, the lack of chemistry between characters, particularly the father and son, became evident. Despite its intended purpose, the movie lacked the substance needed to leave a lasting impression or make viewers eager for more. Ultimately, "Pet Sematary Bloodlines" is not a film that warrants a second viewing. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/12/24 Full Review Mikahya C This movie actually sucked Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review Kara W This movie was terrible. Nothing like the last ones and extremely slow start. Stereotypical acting tropes. If you’re willing to waste almost 2 hours, give it a shot. At least I didn’t have to pay extra for it.
