Critics Consensus

Set It Up follows the long-established outlines of the rom-com template -- and in the process, proves there's still substantial pleasure to be wrought from familiar formulas.

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Director Claire Scanlon...gets everyone leaning into their roles, and Deutch is a particular delight. Sep 26, 2018 Full Review Ella Kemp Little White Lies Claire Scanlon's Manhattan meet-cute is a bouncy comedy with plenty to say about modern relationships. Aug 24, 2018 Full Review Bethonie Butler Washington Post It's wildly predictable and a little cheesy. And yet, it's an absolute gem of a movie. Jul 24, 2018 Full Review Patricia Karounos Refinery29 Deutch and Powell are so good together that they should be making more movies together à la Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, or Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling — it’s what we deserve. Oct 23, 2023 Full Review Kate Boyle InSession Film Set It Up is filled with crazy challenges for the assistants to overcome to keep their bosses happy and together, all while navigating their own personal problems. It’s a fun movie that’s easy to watch, so I recommend anyone with Netflix give it a try. T C Deutch is the only character worth caring about here and as an actress she combines the natural beauty of a young Rose Byrne with a charming vulnerability. Physically, Powell smacks of William Hurt but lacks his authority; his performance is strictly cookie-cutter romcom. I would have been better off hitting the snooze button. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Victor P You know from beginning that they were setting themselves up Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/23/24 Full Review Lj R I only made it about 20 minutes before I quit. Distasteful in the extreme. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Zoya V May I just say that you should eat up every second of every Glen Powell romance movie because I am literally in love with each and every one of them. As someone who basically has an addiction to romance movies (especially 2000 movies though), I loved 'Set It Up' with all my heart. In short, two assistants that work in the same building, Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell) hate their bosses with this deep passion everyone can relate to. They stay up late, work late, at their bosses service literally twenty-four seven, and have to deal with their anger issues and extreme stubbornness. Harper lets her intrusive thoughts win, thinking if they could lock they lock them up, the bosses could hook up and date and stop being miserable that would free Harper and Charlie from this never ending monstrosity of their bosses chokehold and giving them a breather. It's the plan, the characters, the humour that I really loved and I would really recommend this movie if you love an average, ordinary romance movie, love the 'you've been right in front of me and I was blind to see' trope, and love good chemistry with the characters. Not a single second of this movie was mundane and I loved this with passion. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Sandor A good light-hearted rom com. Doesn't overstay its welcome, nor does it stray too far from the cookie cutter formula. Overall there are some laughs, and enough tension throughout the film to stay engaged. Not revolutionary, but not a waste of time either. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/24 Full Review Thom G It has its funny moments, but the romantic connections are not entirely convincing Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews
