What to Know

Critics Consensus

She's Funny That Way is an affectionate, talent-filled throwback to screwball comedies of old -- which makes it even more frustrating that the laughs are disappointingly few and far between.

Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint A light and likeable screwball comedy with a stellar ensemble cast. Aug 15, 2019 Full Review Claudia Puig The Asahi Shimbun GLOBE (Japan) She's Funny That Way is trying very hard to be a sexy screwball comedy. It tries so hard, with such a contrived and silly story, that it only succeeds in wearing the audience down. [Full review in Japanese] Rated: 1.5/4 Dec 19, 2016 Full Review Charles Bramesco Consequence She's Funny That Way makes for good fun, though it's not necessarily funny in that, or many other, ways. If nothing else, it's heartening to see Bogdanovich back in the saddle. Rated: C+ Sep 1, 2015 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Occasionally muddled though it may be, She’s Funny That Way has an appealing cast and blithe spirit, even if the experience is somehow frustrating because we can see that Bogdanovich is oh-so-close to a very good film. Rated: 2.5/4 May 29, 2022 Full Review Nikki Baughan AWFJ.org With an eclectic career spanning almost five decades, Bogdanovich is one of cinema's most enduring stalwarts. Oct 12, 2021 Full Review Pam Grady AWFJ.org ...a film that dangles the promise of capturing some of that old Bogdanovich magic... Sep 29, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Drina W What makes over-the-top slapstick films work is when you still buy them in some way. I didn't buy any of this and it was kind of cheesy with cringy writing moments. I mean, "I think happiest girls are the prettiest girls...", spoke by the lead female character? Owen Wilson basically plays the same character in almost every film he's in. Imogen Poots' Brooklyn accent is just way too over the top so that it doesn't even seem real. I just kept wondering where she was actually from. Something about this feels like some sort of 1950's NYC Hollywood fantasy mixed with with the 21st century in terms of the characters. There was some stellar acting and comedy from Jennifer Anderson, Austin Pendleton, Will Forte, and Lucy Punch. The scenes with them were hysterical and sheer pleasure to watch. They were the saving grace of this film for me. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Jason P Another amazing film that is beautiful theatre - awesome cast as always. Love ALL his films. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/03/24 Full Review donnie m EVERY movie Owen Wilson is in, he ACTS the same (like an idiot) and i just can't watch him anymore. he makes me want to punch him in the face so he'll shut up BUT, this is the first time i've seen Imogen Poots in a movie and she's a 'really' good, natural actress. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/24/23 Full Review StephenPaul C LOL, the funniest 01 hour: and 33 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Starring Owen Wilson and former Saturday Night Live cast member Will Forte!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated R for Some Language, and Sexual References!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Featuring Quentin Tarantino as himself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/15/23 Full Review isla s I found this an amusing watch. Its quite farcical, with a far fetched plot and its not what I'd think of as an out and out 'rom com', as its less about romance and more a sort of farcical hyperactive comedy, with some slapstick. Its certainly quirky and I quite liked how the female characters showed some of the male characters up, although one of the female characters was far from particularly nice, it does have to be said. Both male and female characters have quite exaggerated characteristics, which I found amusing, It was a surprisingly entertaining, quite quirky film - one I'd recommend. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member While this movie has an all-star cast of amazing actors, I'm surprised they agreed to work on something that, at its heart, had no real story arc. The acting is sometimes fun, and the interview running throughout the movie helps keep the pace moving, but there's very little care created for the characters. Each person acts selfishly, and as an audience member, I don't feel any connection to their struggles. With a more clear direction, this movie could have been fantastic. The story seemed to just flip-flop back and forth from the same concept of someone trying to cheat and almost getting caught. Then they get caught and need to fess up. But in the end, everyone ends up hating each other all the same. So what was the point of everyone's struggle anyway? Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
