What to Know

Critics Consensus

Forgetting to give Russell Crowe a compelling mystery to solve, Sleeping Dogs lies down rather than stands on its own.

Stephen Romei The Australian The murder mystery Sleeping Dogs is Russell Crowe's best film for a while. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald It’s an engrossing plunge into the film noir tradition and it’s a pleasure to watch Crowe embody the very fallible Freeman. Rated: 4/5 Aug 1, 2024 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian This is certainly not a crime thriller in the dourly realistic “cold case” vein; it is outrageously over-the-top at all times, with crazy and almost dreamlike convolutions of plot, and yet its silliness is enjoyably dramatised. Rated: 3/5 Jun 18, 2024 Full Review John Serba Decider Let Sleeping Dogs lie. Aug 9, 2024 Full Review Archika Khurana The Times of India Crowe’s performance is a standout, adding depth and grounding to an otherwise erratic film. His portrayal of Freeman injects moments of authenticity into the narrative, making Sleeping Dogs engaging despite its flaws. Rated: 3/5 Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Jim Schembri jimschembri.com An absorbing slow-burn thriller with a very strong plot and a terrific finale,...a sterling, noir-tinged mystery with Russell Crowe at his brooding best Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 1, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member This psychological crime thriller drama is really good, the mystery is good enough to follow as you pay attention to the clues and the Easter eggs but running time is too long could be shorter and certain moments in movie where it lags when there he having to much conversation with his suspects and friend and trying to remember and sometimes it feels like a dream scene then a memory. The ending does have a good twist and when everything is reveal is actually pretty cool expect before the credits there something up to you to interpret. All in all definitely recommend and give a A+👍👍👍👍 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Matt R Story had glimpses that it might be more nuanced but then quickly throws all that out and delivers a very predictable ending. When a voice over starts delivering plot critical information 5 minutes into the movie it immediately destroys any immersion. This whole movie is a excellent example of why "show, don't tell" is important - there are some sections where Russell Crow builds up tension well, and then gets thrown out by a voiceover spoon feeding the audience. Lots of immersion breaking moments with the voiceover and dialogue explicitly feeding the audience information. Dialogue is poorly written, and inconsistently acted. There are some inexplicable accents by Karen Gillan - her voice fluctuates between "I'm sad" to "I'm the Dalmatian lady from 100 Dalmatians". Marton Csokas also has some confusing scenes. It's almost like the actors were trying to convey emotional changes with their voices - but chose a particular tone for the scene and stuck with it, rather than actually modifying their behavior in response to the dialogue. It makes the actual dialogue quite predictable as you can guess what is going to happen based on the tone of their voice. Russell Crow and Harry Greenwood were the Ok but didn't need to express a large range of emotions (confused, lonely man and crazy, lonely man). Editing was Ok, but had a confusing section between Russell Crowe and Karen Gillan where the camera cut away to show the reaction of the actors faces as the other character talked... and they didn't have a reaction of their face? It kind of felt like they were covering something up rather than adding to the tension. Audio was good! Characters could be heard, music and ambient noise was all really nicely mixed. Dramatic "stand off" near the finale caused laughter in the theater. Predictable climax somehow outstayed it's welcome? Yeah yeah, we get it... end the movie now please? Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Ryan C Best Rusty Crowe movie I've seen in years!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/05/24 Full Review Chris S Russell delivers another fine performance as a detective with alzheimers. The ending wasn’t what I expected!!!!!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/05/24 Full Review Lee T Slow burner but soon got in to this movie. Enjoyed the story line and the acting from Crowe was excellent. With a few hidden side stories thrown into the mix this was a not too heavy movie well worth a watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/04/24 Full Review Jelisije J A really long and overly predictable movie of a former cop dealing with old cases that he cant remember because he is suffering from dementia and he must figure out who killed this one man many years ago or an innocent man will be put to death.
