What to Know

Critics Consensus

Straight Jacket succeeds in its moments of lighthearted comedy, but ultimately collapses under the weight of its serious -- and clumsily imparted -- messages.

Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle It has verve, color and energy, but there's something fundamentally bogus about it, and whenever it takes a turn into seriousness, entire moments fall apart. Rated: 2/4 Jan 7, 2005 Full Review Robert K. Elder Chicago Tribune Day's pyrotechnic dialogue and instinctive comic timing make Straight-Jacket a delight. Rated: 3/4 Jan 6, 2005 Full Review Joe Leydon Variety A fey and frisky farce with a fabulous fashion sense. Dec 23, 2004 Full Review Stephen Rebello The Advocate Straight-Jacket's themes -- the price of staying in the closet, the pain of being an unwitting beard, the McCarthy witch hunts that destroyed lives -- are way too rich to merely get popped like champagne bubbles in a campy comedy. Apr 20, 2022 Full Review David Noh Film Journal International On film, things play as flatly as any failed souffl. Mar 1, 2007 Full Review Sean P. Means Salt Lake Tribune Until it tries to mean something, Straight-Jacket is an enjoyably manic little farce whose wit far exceeds its production budget. Ja K A very well-made movie base loosely based on Rock Hudson. Loved it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/17/24 Full Review Audience Member The movie had some good laughs, but then when it tried to get serious, came off melodramatic and hacky. Cartwright, Letscher, and Preston made the most of the somewhat flimsy material, but Greer's stiff, wooden performance made his character, who could veer into self-righteous self-importance, unlikeable. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Very campy style with bright colours and cheesy lines and sore thumb CGI, but Michael Emerson's performance and the comedic timings keep it funny and going. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Straight up, the funniest gay comedy I've seen. How nice to see a gay themed movie and not wince at the acting or production values. OK, well a few of the CGI establishment shots were wince-inducing, but I think they were supposed to be making fun of matte paintings. This one's a "don't miss". Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This zany and over-the-top movie is good for a few laughs! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Thought i would hate it but it was surprisingly funny and a bit over the top but maybe thats the point. An interesting concept and a good movie all around. I actually liked it! B Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
