What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Conjuring 2 can't help but lose a bit of its predecessor's chilly sting through familiarity, but what remains is still a superior ghost story told with spine-tingling skill.

Kambole Campbell One Room With A View Wan is still effective in creating memorable and horrific imagery that lingers in the mind, as well as moments of levity in-between that are surprisingly genuine and sweet. Rated: 3/5 Aug 25, 2018 Full Review K. Austin Collins The Ringer It is a basic thing done very well, in many ways a pristine example of what Wan always shows up to do. He's going to keep you anxious  --  nothing can feel totally stable when a camera never ceases to move. Aug 10, 2017 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online What folks aren't really talking about is how romantic the film is. Rated: B+ Mar 21, 2017 Full Review Savina Petkova A Good Movie To Watch You can't tell from its beginning, but the second Conjuring is even more proficient, deeply troubling, and most of all, bold in the way it renders the possession horror genre a canonical must. Rated: 8.3 Nov 7, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies There is a very old-fashioned horror movie approach to these films that I adore. The sequel wisely embraces that formula while also telling another compelling story from the Warren’s casebook. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Wilson and Farmiga hold the otherwise typical proceedings together, making the usual mechanics of a filmic haunting feel dialed-up on emotional terms. Angel the movie was pretty exciting and creepy. Really good!!! Good effects, awesome music, nice cinematography. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/04/21 Full Review Yenno V Net zoals de eerste film een absolute topper al was die niet beter. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/06/24 Full Review Shannon S Not as engaging as its predecessor, but still packs a bunch of good scares and a decent enough storyline to keep you engaged. But nothing new really. You get what you get and don't really expect too much more really. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/05/24 Full Review Matt G Wan’s building of tension in this film is superb. He omitted all jump scares until the climax of the movie, having us apprehensive of that happening throughout the paranormal activity of the first two thirds of the movie. This made the jumpscare ten times more frightening. He used shots outside of the main plot to build tension too, an example being him using a shot of rain in a puddle clouding a vision of the house, which when seen after seeing a flooded basement makes us subconsciously apprehensive that the house will flood completely. Genius. He also builds tension by saving isolation of the main characters for the end of the film while keeping us scared in anticipation of it. Wan creates an environment where members of the public are aware of the haunting and people believe the victims but that still doesn’t stop them and the audience from being terrified. This takes talent to do, If things can be made scary with everyone in the know, which is an unusually chilling trick and testimony to great writing and directing, one can only imagine in anticipation how scary the haunting would be when the public becomes less involved and characters get separated from each other. So we’re on the edge of our seats waiting for this and then it happens. Most horror movies use isolation as a scare tactic early on in the plot, which you can only build on so much over time, leading those flicks to drag and disengage viewers over time, but Wan saves the isolation for later, building tension. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review Rick J My family loves horror films and this is number 1 on our list. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/14/24 Full Review Абдуллах Г the Conjuring 2 is as amazing as I thought it would be!!! The atmosphere, the camera shots, the acting skills, the believability are superbly done!! James Wan is such a great horror director!! This movie turned out to be amazing with story and the movie is very long !!! In my opinion, a horror movie that is not as scary as the first movie, but it turned out to be great!!!
