What to Know

Critics Consensus

A squirm-inducing period piece that locates true horror in both mind and spirit, The Devil's Bath might be Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz's most chilling directorial effort yet.

Kristy Puchko Mashable Though not a horror movie in the traditional sense, Fiala and Franz's latest delivers an unblinking portrait of inhumanity and festered faith. Jun 28, 2024 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com You don’t need to abandon all hope to enter the movie’s painterly frame, but that sort of blind submission often seems to be the only emotional threshold to cross. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 27, 2024 Full Review Filipe Freitas Always Good Movies The low-key, handsomely photographed production drips with atmosphere, and we know there are competent hands behind the camera and just enough mystery to keep the audience guessing. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 3, 2024 Full Review Sumner Forbes Film Threat Much of its horror comes from the realization that, for a supposedly advanced society, we’re not that far removed chronologically from this twisted existence. Rated: 8.5/10 Jul 18, 2024 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix The Devil's Bath is not easy to watch for people who expect horror movies to have quick pacing and obvious jump scares. This 'slow burn' film, set in 1750 Austria, shows the terror of untreated mental illness in a strict religious community. Jul 10, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Nick C This movie is tough to watch, it brings you into the reality that was the time period that it’s from. Not many people had pleasant lives much less relationships and it forces you to live that from a perspective of a truly good person in a truly un-winnable situation. Slow-burning and bleak as can be. A real look at real life events from the 17th/18th century. Great acting and great cinematography. More of a hard truth/harrowing type movie than a straight up horror film. Personally I liked time traveling to a place I would never want to go (sheer terror at the horrid nature of life in a crazy-strict religious world). More educational than I expected. Let’s all gather round for some sinless blood! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Graham M The acting and the scenery was great but give us a break! There's nothing new, here. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/06/24 Full Review Audience Member Some films fail to entertain despite having a lot of good things to say and saying it well. This is one of those movies. I'd recommend it almost exclusively to those who are very into history and sociology, and those very into film. The filmmaking craft here is excellent, it's just not going to entertain many.
