The House of the Devil

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though its underlying themes are familiar, House of the Devil effectively sheds the loud and gory cliches of contemporary horror to deliver a tense, slowly building throwback to the fright flicks of decades past.

Jen Yamato Movies.com In this era of torture porn and slasher pics, House of the Devil is a shining example of how to build atmosphere and tension the old-fashioned way. Rated: 4/5 Oct 10, 2012 Full Review Perri Nemiroff CinemaBlend Recreates the feeling of 80s horror; less CGI, more imagination and a whole lot of corn syrup. Rated: 3/5 Aug 14, 2010 Full Review Nigel Andrews Financial Times The pay-off is a little far-fetched, but by then we have had our emotional workout. Rated: 3/5 Mar 22, 2010 Full Review Zofia Wijaszka Nerdspin This terrifying, culty horror film is a highly underrated gem and it masterfully evokes the 80s’ atmosphere through the storyline, costume, and set design. Jonah K Wow. The restraint of this was unbearable and I say that as a compliment. Also, architecture as a horror device will always impress me. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Keith M I paused it when it was getting good because I was getting sleepy only to realize there was only 16 minutes left including credits. Great score and cinematography but overall incredibly boring and dry. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review Solomon K One of the absolute worst movies I’ve ever seen, and I watch a lot of horror movies. How this film garnered any good reviews is a mystery to me. The characters are one dimensional and the story has been told to death. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Ari V Definitely better than average, but still a rather hollow nothingburger all in all for me. Some interesting little tidbits though. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/25/24 Full Review Derrick S Very slow build to a very good last 30 minutes or so. Good building of tension and dread, but some of the 1st hour really kinda drags on. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/30/24 Full Review Art W It's been a couple years since I've watched it but I remember that the movie had a cool new take on the subject matter... and also ventured into a revenge flick which I always enjoy. From what I remember, I liked it and would recommend it . But, i'm about to watch it for the second time tonight, and I'll review this once I'm done and change or add on if needed :) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
