What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Killing of a Sacred Deer continues director Yorgos Lanthimos' stubbornly idiosyncratic streak -- and demonstrates again that his is a talent not to be ignored.

Robert Daniels 812filmreviews Has a doctor ever killed your father, and you used voodoo to get back him? Yea, me too. Yorgos Lanthimos's follow-up to The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, is every bit as creepy, dark, and ironic as the former. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 5, 2018 Full Review Namrata Joshi The Hindu The Killing of a Sacred Deer scares, baffles, unsettles, annoys and peels off the happy smokescreen to reveal the discomfiting reality of yet another upper class family. Jul 11, 2018 Full Review Karl Quinn The Age (Australia) Bleakly brilliant. Rated: 4/5 Feb 15, 2018 Full Review tt stern-enzi Cincinnati CityBeat The usual stark realities we’ve been familiar with for how we see the ‘nati give way to the thrilling fun of Cincinnati as a dark and twisted hellscape out of The Twilight Zone. Aug 26, 2023 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast An absurdly funny and dread-filled experience, filled with Lanthimos' trademark wit and monotone performances. It won't be for everyone, but The Killing of a Sacred Deer is something unique and special. Rated: 4/5 Apr 5, 2023 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine Lanthimos remains very talented, but this seems like a little bit of a self-misdirection away from an original visual language into the working through of influences that were seemingly already worked through. Lauren G This movie definitely had me interested and the style of how all of the characters spoke definitely caught my eye LOL but i dont know man it didnt exactly WOW me. It was great to watch but i wouldn't watch it again. However after researching that its based off the ancient Greek story made me appreciate it more. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/23/24 Full Review Doriana S Great creepy movie 😉 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/19/24 Full Review Buck D Great acting, interesting premise. Tries a little too hard to be artsy and metaphorical at times but kept me glued to screen, unlike many other artsy movies. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/04/24 Full Review Robert T Really, really uncomfortable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/03/24 Full Review Audience Member This psychological horror thriller is okay, characters have great chemistry and the way camera moves and direction the way put these actors through and mystery behind this plot it goes and driven from the start but really artsty, slow paced and the running time can seem very long cause the director and writing and how they act and talk, it seems emotionalless right way but me knowing it and that what makes it good acting with these good actors and having score and those feels and give me a stage play tone and dramatic feeling that you will like watching like a Broadway played but cinematic format. Now it might be for you but as the movie goes in last 1 hr and 30 minutes of the movie and gives a surprisely ending and you will be shock and breathless and give a B+👍 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/02/24 Full Review Ulley T Chilling. Fascinating. A must-watch for Yorgos fans Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews
