Critics Consensus

While The King is sometimes less than the sum of its impressive parts, strong source material and gripping performances make this a period drama worth hailing.

Angie Han Mashable The King is so laden with the trappings of profundity and prestige that in the end, it smothers itself to death. Dec 6, 2019 Full Review Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting The plays are about [Hal's] youth and immaturity - his unreadiness to be king - and Chalamet captures that impetuousness. Rated: 4/5 Nov 22, 2019 Full Review Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Almost everything about The King works brilliantly, from the casting (not least Robert Pattinson as a deliciously detestable Dauphin) to the generally cracking script by Michôd and Edgerton. Nov 13, 2019 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews Filmmaker Michôd delivers a slow-moving yet perpetually engrossing endeavor that benefits from its atmospheric visuals and surfeit of captivating performances... Rated: 3.5/4 Nov 8, 2022 Full Review Jane Freebury The Canberra Times (Australia) Kings and kingship are not in themselves such a fashionable subject for audiences today, but the question of good leadership and how to govern is as relevant today as it has always been, and will not go away. Rated: 4/5 Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “The King” does a good job reinventing Shakespeare’s characters and using them to offer up a meaningful critique of imperialism and the politics of war. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/11/24 Full Review Audience Member I saw the cast and the trailer looked fantastic. The movie was not what I was expecting, instead of a historical epic it was more of a character study of Chamalet’s Hal. That’s not to say it was bad. I thought it excelled on what it set out to do. One meh was the dialogue seemed to think it was saying more than it actually was. Robert Pattinsons French accent is very good! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/22/24 Full Review Raymie K Jaw dropped. Great movie and was very easy to follow along with. Crazy plot twist and great acting. 10/10 movie! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Jillian F I really liked the cast. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Liz K It was well written, with great cinematography of the battle of Agincourt Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Read all reviews
