What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Nun boasts strong performances, spooky atmospherics, and a couple decent set-pieces, but its sins include inconsistent logic and narrative slackness.

Bilge Ebiri Rolling Stone Once everyone gets to the abbey, the film simply gives up the ghost and cynically indulges every horror trick in the book. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 10, 2018 Full Review Matthew Rozsa Salon.com By overly relying on jump scares, "The Nun" uses a mechanical approach toward instilling fear rather than a more profound understanding of terror. Rated: 2/4 Sep 23, 2018 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times Alas, The Nun is more chaotic than most of the many, many films set in The Conjuring universe. To compare it to a ghost train would be to understate the narrative cohesion that habitually governs those seaside entertainments. Rated: 2/5 Sep 18, 2018 Full Review Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) The movie isn’t so bad that it requires an exorcism, but audiences may still feel the need to repent… assuming they can remember what they’re repenting for. Rated: 2/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies But then you get to the storytelling which slowly sucks out the film’s potential. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Desirée De Fez Fotogramas Hardy orchestrates horror with elegance and taste, reaching in some scenes an unexpected sophistication in the design, the choreography, and the editing... Justin enjoyed this movie. great story telling. loved that farmigas daughter ggot to play a younger version of her. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/21 Full Review Shannon S The nun is scary looking I get that. But that's all you got?! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/05/24 Full Review Audience Member i almost fell asleep while watching this move, sure, it might have been because of the fact that I have 24 mosquito bites and had just taken benadryl because I am allergic to bug bites, although I am NEVER one to fall asleep during a movie. this movie was so boring that watching paint dry was a distraction. everything felt unnecessary and forced, like how farther burke tells the story about daniel and then oops, there is the ghost of daniel leading farther burke outside where he gets trapped in a spirit halloween looking ahh gravestone. like why couldnt they have told that story earlier instead of using it for a cheap setup for a scene that was mediocre anyways??? there was like 50 different times when i wanted to turn this movie off. not because it was scary, but because of how boring it is. this movie also isn't scary in the slightest. all the jumpscares (which aren't a great thing for a horror movie to have anyways) are all literally the same thing as something else from earlier in the movie or something from another conjuring universe movie. this movie makes me so mad that i want to didilly darn smack it out of this universe it had much potential to be a cool story with a cool setting but they just failed it so bad a 4 year old could direct this movie better than coring hardy i am so mad right now i am about to blow up help i hate it so much fojdshnvdjfklghn9dfou;jblnvifljdolnvojdfl wow that escalated fast Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/01/24 Full Review Ivan Gaton F It doesn't make sense the acting of the father and the nun. So forced and weak Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/29/24 Full Review Dimitris T The Nun is a perfect example of why jumpscare abuse isn't enough to make a good horror film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review John F While the leads work well together--Farmiga is lovely--they cannot rescue this film from being too predictable and (thus) not scary.
