Tara Brady Irish Times [A] reasonably entertaining, imprudently daft aquatic thriller. Rated: 3/5 Dec 5, 2016 Full Review David Stratton The Australian The realism of the early scenes -- leaving aside Nancy's unaccountable willingness to be stranded alone in a remote place -- is replaced by increasingly silly scenes that lead eventually to a nonsensical conclusion. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 19, 2016 Full Review David Sexton London Evening Standard About half of what is now going on in all cinema is the product of technological advances in film-making and The Shallows makes much more intelligent use of them than the superheroes do. Rated: 4/5 Aug 14, 2016 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) Filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra never fails with these mid-budget thrillers, and this might be his strongest film to date. Aug 4, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “The Shallows” wisely stays true to its central concept. Its hook could easily wear thin if it extended itself too far, but the compact 80 minute running time keeps the tension high and the story moving forward. Rated: 4/5 Aug 25, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The Shallows may contain a few occasional shocks, but this is indeed surface level stuff. Tomas G Other than Blake Lively in a bikini, and a few moments of cool surfing video, there was nothing of quality in this movie. The premise is ridiculous, the plot seemed devised by a teenage boy, and the “climactic ending” absolutely absurd. Although the CGI effects were strong and almost realistic, it could not overcome the complete lack of reality involving any of the shark behavior. From the first moment she enters the beach - a completely pristine, placid beach, without even so much as lapping waves, then paddles out into roaring surf with monster tubes, they lost me. Then she spends an entire evening and part of the next day on a rock before she mentions the tide coming in (tides are 12-hour cycles EVERYWHERE). Add to that how a dead whale manages to stay stationary for days while the helmet drifts into the beach… duh. Not a single thing about this movie bears resemblance to believable, which means the writing and directing failed. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Mark C Better than most shark survival films. Plus this one has the amazing Blake Lively Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Thom G "The Shallows" delivers precisely what one would expect from a movie of its genre and succeeds in maintaining a suspenseful, entertaining, and tense atmosphere throughout. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review Hirak The best shark movie ever made. Much better than Jaws. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Jenna B This movie got old quick. Blake way too attractive for part. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/24/24 Full Review Read all reviews
