H.H. Niemeyer St. Louis Post-Dispatch A gripping drama. Feb 22, 2024 Full Review John Betjeman London Evening Standard The original method of directing this rather commonplace story-- the neatness with which we are reminded that it is all in the past, and the symbolism, are enough to make it a film worth seeing. Feb 22, 2024 Full Review George Campbell Dixon Daily Telegraph (UK) This melodrama of a young woman who takes the blame for an ambitious young politician's crime is moderately effective, thanks to some sincere and competent acting by Zita Johann, Alan Dinehart, Paul Cavanagh and John Miljan. Feb 22, 2024 Full Review Star Staff Washington Star It is morose and tangled, and whatever merit may be due, it is due only to the heroic efforts of its cast to uphold the material given them. Feb 22, 2024 Full Review Ada Hanifin San Francisco Examiner It is the direction of this film which gives the melodrama dignity originality in its presentation, and character delineation, apart from the plot development and good acting of the cast. Feb 22, 2024 Full Review E.H. Gooding Buffalo News The film, however, has such a soporific effect on audiences that it is doubtful if many can be bothered to sort out the real events from the imaginary ones. Audience Member ok B movie fare at just 65 minutes Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review walter m The movie starts with Mrs. Edith Crawford(Claire Du Brey) storming into the office of District Attorney John Grant(Alan Dinehart), also her brother, demanding to know about the steamy letters written by Nora Moran(Zita Johann) to her husband, Dick(Paul Cavanagh), the governor. John, then, patiently explains as to how Nora not only came to write those letters but also to be on the death row at the age of 21. Such a tale of woe begins with Nora being adopted at a young age and then cruelly orphaned again a few years later. But she does not give up, pursuing a career in dance in New York City which is fruitless until the circus comes calling. While novels had already employed stream of consciousness at this time, it is very unusual and innovative for a movie like "The Sin of Nora Moran" to use it. To its credit, it utilizes the technique to great effect in its suspenseful story that keeps the twists and turns going until the very end. That's not the only way this movie is ahead of its time as it also takes well-aimed shots at moral hypocrisies while also detailing the death penalty of the electric chair.
