CJ J The immediate vibe I got from watching this film was that the director truly appreciates melodramas from the 1950s and 60s. So if your taste runs toward liking things like Inge's "A Delicate Balance",, Albee's "Who's Aftraid of Virginia Woolf",, or Tennessee Williams' "Glass Menagerie", you've definitely landed on the film you need.. Overall, the cinematography and acting is pretty good - in fact, I think that since the script is so dialogue heavy and influenced by stage plays, it probably has experienced stage actors inhabiting the main roles. Which makes sense, since the beginning of the film shows a couple of actresses doing theater and some of the backstage drama and intrigue that happens while doing a play. Things bogged down a little bit with the pacing and editing, however. This viewer thought things could be tightened up considerably. But if you'd like hard and heavy melodrama, you'll definitely appreciate this film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/24/24 Full Review Bill C THIS IS YOUR SONG in many ways reflects the reverence that one of the characters has for theater. With a seemingly single take for almost the entire production, the film exudes the intimacy of a theatrical play but with the added dimension of a dynamic, ever-moving camera. Kudos to the cast and cinematographer for their complex dance of choreography, dialogue, and framing. The performances feel genuine, and the relationship between the characters is painfully authentic as we witness a single evening after Jules' successful stage performance and the celebration of their wedding anniversary. The two artists—James, a writer, and Jules, an actress—confront the practical reality of living in a difficult city as they navigate love, change, and adapt to the banalities of daily life. At times, the film makes us feel like voyeurs witnessing an emotionally awkward encounter. It's not until the finale that the film resumes a conventional editorial style for a flashback depicting the evolution of their relationship. This climactic and welcome shift successfully signifies the significance of the finale, providing a powerful conclusion to their story. THIS IS YOUR SONG is a masterful blend of theatrical and cinematic storytelling, creating an experience that is both intimate and visually engaging. The dedication of the cast and crew to this unique storytelling approach results in a film that resonates with authenticity and emotional depth. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/18/24 Full Review Alec C This is Your Song. It’s the city by the bay. Gray days and festive nights. It’s the night of their wedding anniversary and there’s a gulf of regret, shame, love, and admiration all at once between James and Jules. It ebbs and flows between memories of toxic dysfunction, and blissful moments of pure romance and bliss. There’s a moment or two for anyone who takes this journey with them. Relationships are hard, and they’re even harder to leave. Jules and James share a tumultuous journey through long uncut shots and emotive lighting. It’s as though you’re right there with them, because chances are you probably have been. Standout performances by Brianna Walsh, Joanna Kay, and Jordan Potch. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/23/24 Full Review Ethan M Prepare to be swept away on an emotional journey with "This Is Your Song." This film isn't just a viewing experience; it's a visceral immersion into the complexities of relationships and love. What sets "This Is Your Song" apart is its daring use of continuous shots and minimal cuts, which seamlessly guide the audience through the unfolding drama as if we're right there in the room with the characters. As we witness the turbulent relationship at the film's core, we're compelled to ponder timeless questions: Should love conquer all? Can we overlook our partner's flaws? And when ambition clashes with affection, what sacrifices are we willing to make? Against the backdrop of a changing San Francisco, where gentrification and technology redefine the cityscape, "This Is Your Song" resonates as a film of our time while paying homage to classics like "A Streetcar Named Desire." It delves deep into the essence of human connection, challenging us to confront the complexities of intimacy and the sacrifices it demands. Central to the film's success are the captivating performances of Briana Walsh and Jordan Potch. Their portrayal of a couple teetering on the brink of dissolution is nothing short of mesmerizing, oscillating between moments of vulnerability and strength with a nuanced finesse that speaks volumes. It's evident that their chemistry was honed through meticulous rehearsal, resulting in a captivating on-screen dynamic that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. In "This Is Your Song," every frame is a testament to the power of storytelling, leaving an indelible mark on the heart long after the credits roll. Whether you're a romantic at heart or a cinephile seeking thought-provoking narrative, this film is an absolute must-see. So, surrender to its spellbinding charm and prepare to be moved, inspired, and thoroughly captivated. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Catherine C A melodramatic look at a truly toxic dysfunctional relationship, ripe with dialogue that seems fit for the stage. The indulgency featured here is beyond uncomfortable, which seems to be the objective. Props to cast and crew to the commitment and ferver required to make a drama of this subject and length. Might be triggering to anyone who has been through any domestic violence. I liked the lighting and thought the camera work was really great. The opening and end had some fun moments that hooked me in and made me want to visit San Fran. I would definitely recommend this movie to someone wanting to watch a messed up relationship drama. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/14/24 Full Review Patrick W There is some great filmmaking and storytelling on display in this movie. This look into a relationship among Bohemian-styled artists feels classic in the sense that the dialogue seems ripped from classic American theater (the lead is performing on stage in the beginning, no less) and post-World War II American literature. But this is a modern couple and their relationship dynamics burst forth with some serious and heartbreaking monologues. Much of this film is shot in long takes. The virtuoso camera work, sharp direction. and changes in lighting make these long takes flow seamlessly and actually enhances the drama. The acting among the two leads is also strong. If you appreciate classic American drama, theater, and literature, this is a movie to check out. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews
