Critics Consensus

Under the Cherry Moon may satisfy the most rabid Prince fans, but everyone else will be better served with this vanity project's far superior soundtrack.

David Robinson Times (UK) It is fast and featherweight, and the diminutive Prince is funny, cheekily charming and pretty as a picture. Jul 30, 2024 Full Review Karen Hawkins Chicago Reader Should you subject yourself or your loved ones to Under the Cherry Moon, my family recommends following it up-quickly- with Purple Rain or Sign 'o' the Times as a palate cleanser. Jan 25, 2019 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire It's strange that so few critics seemed to understand that it's a silly film, purposefully so, and tried to use their prose to laugh at it - as if Prince weren't laughing way ahead of them. He was TELLING the joke. Oct 15, 2016 Full Review Madeleine Harmsworth Sunday Mirror (UK) I found this ego-trip, in black and white, painfully tedious. Jul 25, 2024 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Combustible Celluloid It's not exactly Lubitsch, to be sure, but it's an attractive and diverting comedy. Jun 4, 2024 Full Review Herb Boyd The Crisis Under the Cherry Moon is a great title -- but sadly, that's about all. Dec 26, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Rachel H One of my favourite films as a lover of Prince, it's cheesy, the acting was never going to be Oscar winning but the story line is entertaining and soundtrack is amazing. I can watch it over and over Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/27/23 Full Review MrDonut Under The Cherry Moon may not be as good as Purple Rain, but it is a bit more story-focused. Despite a number of weird moments that are in the film, I honestly enjoyed it. Prince fans will without a doubt like it, but it's not really a film for everyone. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/22 Full Review Audience Member Him Not sure what Prince was doing in this well what he is going for will give better rating once I figure it out Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Sophomore slumps are a real thing. Prince's Purple Rain is considered a critical and financial success. Under the Cherry Moon in my opinion is just not good and it shows Prince did hit a sophomore slump. In fact, Under the Cherry Moon is a poorly executed film. Not only that, the film contains forgettable musical numbers. To top it all off, Prince, Steven Berkoff, and Kristin Scott Thomas were overacting throughout the entire film. Under the Cherry Moon is not a film in my opinion. It's nothing more than a 100 minute music video. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Prince's best movie!! Absolutely hilarious! I loved the comedy element of this one!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Say what you like about this movie, but if you are a Prince fan it's the greatest movie of all time after The Godfather! Lol It's so much fun. A capsule of Prince at his most Swag! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
