Kate Cameron New York Daily News All the parts in the film are well played, under William Wellman's direction. The latter has a way of making these pictures of the old West come alive. He gives each scene a touch of realism that heightens the illusion of the story. Rated: 3/4 Mar 11, 2024 Full Review William Brogdon Variety Schnee's screenplay of the Capra story is best in its use of dialog. Words given the players all have meaning and never appear to be just talk filling in between the action. Mar 11, 2024 Full Review Richard L. Coe Washington Post Charles Schnee, the script writer, and William A. Wellman, the director, have overdone their contributions... had they lopped off half an hour from their running time... Westward the Women would have been a better picture. Mar 8, 2024 Full Review Jay Carmody Washington Star The hardships which provide the exciting incident of Westward the Women are the familair ones of such trips. Mar 8, 2024 Full Review Fred Hift Motion Picture Herald (Exhibitors Herald) It is a Western that'll have 'em gap ing and laughing and perhaps crying in spots. Mar 8, 2024 Full Review Rod Nordell Christian Science Monitor Hardship plays a considerable part in the drama. William A Wellman has directed the well photographed incidents with an eye to action and to the more obvious situation giving opportunity for a display of womanly emotions. Audience Member Hey little long but I highly recommend it really is good James Welch, Henderson, Arkansas, April 2, 2023 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/02/23 Full Review Audience Member I saw this for the first time as a child and I still enjoy the movie today, as an older adult. This is one of my favorite Westerns and I like how it portrays the strength and bravery of the women. Since the movie was made in the early 1950s, it does have some stereotypes of the Native Americans and of the Asian cook. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review s r Initially it was interesting, but then it fell into cliches and a whole stinking heap of Robert Taylor. Saw it on TCM. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a real, gritty and emotional treat. About a wagon trail to Oregon. All women going through a trail of hell to the west. True story all of it The stunts are done by the women. Not interested in limp reviews by men who wouldnt or couldnt appreciate this story. Developed, deep characters. Filmed in a more contemporary way than was fashionable in the 1950s. Women rock!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review dane m Unusual for its great scenes of silences. No one speaks. That's right. No gussied up music, no chit chat, just the action of observation. The acting is solid. The set is real. And the story is wholly believable and un believable. I gasped at the chances the writer, Charles Schnee, took. No one today would forgive him for the brutality of lost souls. This is perfect for a dull Sunday before heading to the pool (or igloo mall in the winter). Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Perhaps not well acted, but this was fun to watch-- Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
