A small eatery called Meshiya -- also referred to as the Midnight Diner -- resides in the back alley of a bustling district. Despite the eatery's unusual hours, 12 a.m. to 7 a.m., a menagerie of customers flock to the establishment each night for a bite to eat and to visit with the proprietor, known as the Master. While there is a menu, which includes pork miso soup set, sake, beer and shochu, the Master makes whatever his customers request. Graeme Blundell The Australian The sharing of comfort food is at the heart of all these tales, along with the personal stories and aspirations of an unlikely community, drawn together in a confessional-like space, adrift on the fringes of one of the world's largest cities. Jul 19, 2021 Full Review Stuart Heritage Guardian Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories is just as woozy and narcoleptic as you would imagine. Apr 19, 2018 Full Review Donal Lynch Independent (UK) Like Japanese food itself it's easy to digest, but contains substantive depth. Jan 3, 2017 Full Review Carla Monfort Espinof A dish that never disappoints, whether it's to binge on or to taste in small doses. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/5 May 30, 2023 Full Review Graeme Tuckett Stuff.co.nz Midnight Diner puts the guts and meaning of friendship among bar-mates up on screen with authenticity and empathy. Oct 19, 2020 Full Review Pratim D. Gupta Film Companion Midnight Diner is almost meditative in its languid narrative and it might not be something you'd like to binge all night but savour one bite at a time. Stuart H Easy watch, great characters who never seem out of place well acted by the cast, heartwarming stories bought together by the love of food and good company. I couldn’t stop watching it and loved every minute!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/08/24 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely amazing, every episode is themed with a dish and a patron of the diner who orders it, behind the dish there is always a story, heartfelt and really genuine. What i like is that it also shows a bit of underbelly of japanese culture. One of the better shows i have seen in years! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Jamie K This series displays humility and decency as the every day norm. And this masterwork is beautiful art as well as fun and funny, too. It's great. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/04/23 Full Review John M The different episodes talks about the life struggles of the customers and life of Japanese in general and somehow Master Chef is like the Godfather where everyone consults with him on what to do with their Life. It's a simple and yet tells you the harsh realities of Life which is sometimes a life crisis moment on your life as well. Rating it a 5 since I love japanese food and its culture. THANK YOU Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/21/23 Full Review Damian W It's really a pretty good series, it's focused on different characters and their different stories, sometimes an episode focuses on the owner of the shop. It is a highly recommended series if you are learning Japanese. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/14/23 Full Review Christopher C This is great entertainment with great little life lessons.I have watched them all Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
