Based on Jones' memoir "Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol", the limited series "Pistol" is the story of a band of spotty, noisy, working-class kids with "no future" who shook the boring, corrupt Establishment to its core, threatened to bring down the government and changed music and culture forever. The furious, raging storm at the center of this revolution is the band Sex Pistols -- and at the center of this series is Sex Pistols' founding member and guitarist, Steve Jones. Jones' hilarious, emotional and at times heartbreaking journey guides viewers through a kaleidoscopic telling of three of the most epic, chaotic and mucus-spattered years in the history of music. What to Know

Critics Consensus

Danny Boyle's frenzied direction brings plenty of energy to this punk biography, but the rote conventions of a band's rise and fall make Pistol something of a misfire.

Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) It is a fairy tale... but there are some very good performances in the fairy tale and the songs work well. Jan 30, 2024 Full Review Andrew Male Times (UK) Seemingly designed to annoy pedantic ex-punks, its retelling of the group’s snotty revolution is funny, brash, hyperbolic and loud. It is also sweetly romantic and, at times, desperately sad. Jul 8, 2022 Full Review Dan Einav Financial Times Much like the band itself, the scripting and direction can occasionally fail to hit the right notes. But the performances by the cast of relative unknowns are largely pitch-perfect. Rated: 3/5 Jun 10, 2022 Full Review Ilan Preskovsky Channel24 (South Africa) Ironically, music biopics often suck at depicting the music itself, so it's doubly ironic that a biopic about a band who were never really about the music, gets the music so very right. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 29, 2023 Full Review Rebecca Johnson Film Focus Online Pistol is full to the brim with sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll which help to keep it afloat, though obvious pacing and storyline issues prevent it from creating a movement of its own. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Peter Bell Vague Visages Pistol stays true to the chaotic nature of the Sex Pistols and manages to sprinkle in some of that Boyle pop energy. Gareth v Entertaining enough but it does play it rather safe, unlike the band and it's music. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/23 Full Review Vittoria S Great casting and amazing photography, a truly underrated hidden gem, perfect if you're into punk or the world of music bands in general, I highly recommend! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/24/23 Full Review Mauro L Forget the grotesque irony of "Trainspotting" (1996) and its sequel (2017). Although Lydon appears for the first time on set with the "I Hate Pink Floyd" t-shirt (true fact), Boyle probes the dark side of the moon, of music, of existence, yet another generational, epochal, historical catastrophe. Lydon himself has harshly criticized the miniseries, but sooner or later reality comes out: "The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle". By losing the lawsuit against his former bandmates, the director was able to make use of their songs thus shooting the most similar thing to Stone's "The Doors" ('91). The biopic suffers from the narrative lengths of an episodic fiction and could have lasted 1/3, perhaps Chrissie Hynde is right when she tells of having had a single sexual relationship with Steve Jones, perhaps Siouxsie Sioux and Billy Idol were there or not: details. It matters that there is the irrepressible power of a group of guys who, precisely because they are unable to play and sing, have recorded only one album with which rock has been reset by bringing it back to its primitive and primordial chords and its lyrics as battle slogans. Stunning to hear the compositional quality they reached, impossible to calculate how many bands were born thanks to their influence, and unthinkable that they could be an exception to "Kill Your Idols". (Mauro Lanari) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/23/23 Full Review Smc Are any of the actors actually working class? They sound like a load of posh boys to me- no real soul. I could not get into the show. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/12/22 Full Review michael m This has some good moments and some bad ones too, particularly some of the musical performances, aren't authentic - perhaps too polished and "clap alongy". Though this will vary on how much you already know the band's story and music. Overall it's worth watching and has some depth to the characters back story. Like how McClaren got cancer from a DIY asbestos removal job and Steve Jones swearing on TV was actually aimed at his abusive step-father. So it fleshes out the bones of the Sex Pistols myth...but at a double take...it's not the Pistols and there is a distinct lack of punk seediness. Though the acting was good all round and some entertaining moments. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Frozen 1 It has its moments but suffers from talking about important part of music history from a perspective of only 1 person. Most actors are a miscast and ironically the things that work the most are made up stories. It looks and feels like a half done project just for the sake of it. Origins of punk are important cultural history moment and if done properly could be a great show - presenting all the bands and their members and how this music changed the culture and the world.
