I remember all the hand-wringing at the time that the animators were putting her (gasp) in bike shorts/ not making her sexy. And then... that's not at all what the show is about. It's not about a femme-fatale. It's about a child trying to figure out friendship and love and loyalty and caring about herself. The writing isn't perfectly consistent (Swift Wind, for instance, wasn't used terribly well as a whole), but all in all it kept you interested from episode to episode, and even when the characters made bad choices, it made you hope they could do better for themselves and for each other.
