In 2001 novelist Michael Peterson's wife died, and he claimed she perished after falling down stairs at their home. The medical examiner, however, determined that she had been beaten with a weapon, which led to Peterson becoming a suspect in what would become a murder investigation. This series, which began with eight episodes in 2005 before being updated in 2013 and 2018, follows the investigation as it proceeds from Peterson's arrest to a verdict being reached in the ensuing trial. The real-life courtroom thriller offers a rare and revealing inside look at a high-profile murder trial and an examination of contemporary American justice. Read More Read Less

Critics Consensus

The Staircase -- in its newly expanded form -- offers a gripping, detailed depiction of the complex justice system, even if the overall narrative lacks objectivity.

Sophie Gilbert The Atlantic It's illuminating how flawed and nave the concept of blind justice is. Jun 18, 2018 Full Review Alastair McKay London Evening Standard At its core, there is an extraordinary study of the character of a man, Michael Peterson, a storyteller caught up in his own drama, playing along. Feb 15, 2019 Full Review Andrew Parker The Gate The Staircase functions best as a documentary looking intently on the shortcomings of the American legal system, and how things can become so convoluted and messy that both victims and the accused will never find justice, closure, or peace. Ashton H Enough to show there was reasonable doubt, also to show that the husband never denied being an asshole, but being an asshole doesn't make you a killer. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/22/24 Full Review Mandy A For anyone who is truly interested in forensics, this is for you. Aside from the obvious science in this being a fall, and interesting to hear the real expert, it's also incredibly sad. It's sad to realize depending on where we live, their prejudices can change ones life and trump science or even common sense. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/19/22 Full Review Audience Member You know the husband did it from the start. The saddest part is watching the lawyer rob these kids of their mothers inheritance. Over and over and over. That should be illegal Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member True crime fans would really enjoy this series! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I'd like to comment on the possibility that if one contends that the deaths of Elizabeth Ratliff and Kathleen Peterson were murders, then there are some likely possible motives that connect them. Elizabeth's husband, who died during a military mission in 1983, was a very good friend of Michael Peterson's. Could the men have been having an affair? A couple of years after Mr. Ratliff's death; is it possible Elizabeth Ratliff found some damning evidence of this affair and maybe others while going through her late husband's things? Could it be that the last night she was seen alive by Mr. Peterson; she had confronted him with the evidence and in a bid to gain back control he took her life and the evidence she had? If his fear of being outed was a probable motive; then is it possible he also flew into a rage with Kathleen upon the discovery of his secret homosexual life? I have previously wondered if Peterson was having an affair with Elizabeth Ratliff? Was her new baby actually Michael's, or could she have suggested that it was? If so then, therefore, it's likely that he wanted to keep that quiet and by killing Elizabeth and by trying to distance himself from the baby/girl by leaving her with family, friends and even trying to adopt her he could mitigate the possibility of the secret coming out. Did he recieved any of the money from the Ratliff's deaths via the biological children of the deceased couple? Some have mentioned that, lack of access to the 💰 or of 💰 running out, may have been a catalyst. Or the motive can some combination or some of or even all three. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely essential viewing. This is not a dramatised crime watch, it's real life in every detail. A gripping and very interesting watch from start to finish. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
