iOS

iOS is Apple's operating system for the iPhone and iPad. It's also the basis for tvOS for the Apple TV and watchOS for the Apple Watch. It's even beginning to infiltrate the Mac in some ways. Apple has worked hard to keep iOS private and secure, and it has a huge ecosystem of apps via its official App Store. Some have argued that it is too locked down, but the trade-off is that it's fast and stable for most users.

The third iOS 18 public beta has arrived.

The update reportedly brings Thanos snap mode (aka Distraction Control), improvements to the Photos app redesign, and other UI tweaks. I can’t wait to snap away some Cookies!

Anyone can download and install the public betas for iPad and iPhone, but pro tip: carry a battery pack with you — betas are brutal on your percentage.

Apple’s new AI features will reportedly miss the iOS 18 launch and wait for iOS 18.1.

Mark Gurman reports for Bloomberg that “Apple Intelligence” features will be available for developers to beta test this week.

However, he also says the first ones won’t be released publicly until weeks after Apple’s big September updates for iPhone / iPad / Mac, etc. Rollouts for others from its WWDC showcase, like upgraded Siri, could stretch into 2025.

Overcast overhaul.

The popular iOS podcast app has been rewritten from the ground up by developer Marco Arment in time for Overcast’s tenth anniversary.

Overcast is now much faster and has a new interface, but it keeps the same audio engine, Arment says in a blog post. Streaming, however, was removed, because of bugs and problems caused by dynamic ad insertion.

Google’s iOS app now lets you set alternate app icons.

There are light and dark versions of the icon with a colorful G and with a monochrome G.

If you have version 324.0 of the app or newer (it’s currently on 325.0), you can set your app icon from Settings > General > Change app icon. (To get the option to appear, I had to force-close the app and reopen it.)

RCS on the iPhone is almost the solution to our green-bubble nightmare

Texting an Android user from an iPhone still isn’t as good as the blue-bubble life. But at least it’s not awful anymore.
