Who could make the town of Funner, California more fun than Martin Short? The Only Murders in the Building actor and legendary comedian was sworn in as the small town’s official mayor Monday morning, taking over a role that was previously held by notable A-listers Jane Lynch, Rob Riggle, and David Hasselhoff.

Short, who was granted a key to the city as part of the swearing-in ceremony, will serve the people of Funner for the next two years before passing on the role to the next famous person. In fact, since the town was created in 2017, only celebrities have served as its leader of local government.

Located in North San Diego County, California, the city of Funner was established in 2016 by the Rincon Tribal Council, the elected governing body of the Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians. A publicity stunt to draw more attention to the local resort, Harrah’s Resort SoCal, the idea quickly snowballed. Now, celebrity mayors must promise to, “protect fun, good times, laughing out loud and positive vibes from the negative influences determined to turn a smile upside down” while also posing pool-side at the resort’s impressive lazy river.

As for new mayor Martin Short, he’s taking the job very seriously: “As the mayor-elect of Funner, I promise to be more than just a spokesperson dressed in purple from head-to-toe, but instead, the best mayor in the whole darn state.”
