Madonna is looking back at the "serious bacterial infection" she suffered just over a year ago.

On Instagram, the 65-year-old singer shared some photos of herself celebrating the Fourth of July with some friends and in the caption, she opened up about recent health journey.

"Happy 4th of July!" she wrote. "A year ago today, I had just come home from the hospital after surviving a life threatening illness, I could barely stand in my backyard holding one sparkler. I made a miraculous recovery and had an amazing year. Thank you God. Life is beautiful! ♥️🧨🔥."

In the comments, people said they were glad to see that the legendary pop star was feeling better, with some even complimenting her on how amazing she looked in her Fourth of July pictures.

One person said, "Words can’t express how scared we were to loose you. Thank god indeed! More power to you fantastic artistic mother. Stick with us forever!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️."

Another wrote, "You should wear more red often ❤️."

A third added, "God save the QUEEN ❤️."

In June 2023, Madonna’s manager, Guy Oseary, took to Instagram to reveal she had been hospitalized for a bacterial infection, which led to a “several day stay” in the ICU. At the time, Oseary said a full recovery was expected for the “Material Girl” singer.

In his statement, he added that Madonna would have to “pause all commitments,” including her tour, a 43-date performance that highlighted her four decade-long career.

A bacterial infection is defined as “any illness or condition caused by bacterial growth or poisons,” according to Cleveland Clinic. Bacterial infections can affect your skin, gastrointestinal tract, lungs, heart, brain or any other part of your body. Common. types include a sinus infection or urinary tract infection.

Neither Oseary nor Madonna specified the kind of infection she had. But NBC News medical correspondent Dr. Natalie Azar said that a condition called sepsis, “when your immune response overreacts to an infection,” is one of the typical reasons for someone to land in the intensive care unit due to a bacterial infection.

A few weeks after Oseary shared his statement on Instagram, Madonna took to the social media platform to update her fans on her health.

In her statement, she thanked fans for their support and shared her first thoughts after waking up in the hospital. She also posted a selfie with her hair down and looking straight on at the camera.

"My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my children," she said in her July 2023 post. "My second thought was that I did not want to disappoint anyone who bought tickets for my tour. I didn't want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show. I didn't want to disappoint anyone."

She added: "My focus now is my health and getting stronger and I can assure you, I'll be back with you as soon as I can!"
