I have witnessed countless difficult and painful scenes while escaping death multiple times. In northern Gaza, life is reduced to a cycle of fleeing from danger and searching for food amidst the rubble of destroyed homes.

Now, my dream is to travel abroad with my mother and sister to continue my education and develop my practical skills. For the past eight months, I have been unemployed, focusing on self-improvement and hoping for a better future.

As you reading my message, myself and my family, “my mother, father, three sisters, and my little brother,” are fighting death in northern Gaza and trying to survive under all kinds of suffering including but not limited to destruction, fear, and instability, starvation, thirst, and poverty.

"Why do we say 'a piece of fruit', but not 'a piece of vegetable'?

Fruit is a mass noun, vegetable is a count noun. Mass nouns are things like hair, grass, rice, etc - mentally we picture them in groups, and in general we talk about them as if the group is a singular entity. Count nouns are other things, like shoes, cats, mattresses - we think if them as individual items and talk about them accordingly. In the same vein, "some fruit" probably means there are multiple types, like a fruit salad, whereas "some vegetables" can mean multiple vegetables OR a mass of one type of vegetable. (Not really an etymological answer at all but it turns out I care enough about this to actually comment after many months of lurking) "

this makes me think back to when i was learning japanese, and how there were several different ways to refer to plurals of different objects, using distinct suffixes based on the type of item being referred to. i remember specifically thinking about how that was a weird quirk of Japanese, though later realized "oh no wait, english has a bunch of weird specificities and contradictions too, it just comes to me naturally because i was raised in it." i think the fascination with the process of learning Japanese is what led to what i ended up studying in college! linguistics are so cool. i love gaining new perspective on stuff.
