Best flat-rate moving companies in 2024

Flat-rate movers help you stick to your budget because you know what you’re going to pay. When a full-service mover offers flat-rate quotes, you can count on receiving all agreed-upon services at that price unless your inventory or move distance meaningfully changes after receiving the quote.

Our research shows American Van Lines and Safeway Moving Systems Inc. are the best flat-rate movers. Each provides full-service, long-distance relocations at bottom-line rates. They’re well-respected in the industry and receive positive reviews across numerous locations.

During the quote phase, note that “flat-rate” and “bottom-line” pricing are synonymous with “binding estimates.” Movers that offer these types of quotes will often use these phrases interchangeably.

American Van Lines

4.2

Our thoughts

American Van Lines has provided flat-rate moving services for long-distance clients since 1995. It features some of the most experienced movers in the industry — 10 years on average — which adds security when booking specialized service needs.

What we like

The advertised flat-rate pricing for long-distance moves is a huge bonus, especially for clients trying to stick to a defined budget. In addition, this mover’s crews average a decade of experience on the job. This means they bring the necessary know-how to handle any residential or commercial moving need.

What we don’t like

American’s negative reviews include reports of slow response times for insurance claims for damaged items. Beyond this, it also requires large upfront deposits to book, which can run as high as 50% of your stated move total.

Services

While American Van Lines offers local moving services, you’ll only be eligible for flat-rate estimates for long-distance and interstate moves. With these packages, this mover offers the following:

  • Packing
  • Full-value protection
  • Crating
  • Assembly and disassembly
  • Storage
  • Vehicle shipping

Cost

We called American and got a bottom-line estimate for a long-distance relocation. This three-bedroom, 2,900-mile quote included a thorough breakdown of our inventory and took 40 minutes. In all, our move would cost $12,532 with no add-on services. Full-service packing would add $5,000. They stressed that without in-person estimates for a move, no quote could be labeled as “binding,” so you’ll have to schedule your own in-person consultation.

Quote type: Binding estimates for long-distance moves and ballpark quotes for local moves

Inventory gathering: This mover can conduct virtual walk-throughs via video call or in-person estimates.

Availability

American Van Lines services all the lower 48 states.

Customer thoughts

This moving company has 4.1 out of 5 stars on BBB with more than 440 customer reviews. Common themes in positive reviews included good communication between booking and moving staff, which led to smooth moves during interstate transit.

Safeway Moving Systems Inc.

4.3

Our thoughts

Safeway Moving Systems Inc. is a long-distance moving company based in Florida that offers relocation assistance to clients in all 50 states. This provider operates as a carrier and a broker but maintains responsibility for lost or damaged items, even for brokered-out moves.

What we like

Safeway advertises flat-rate pricing from the beginning of its quote processes. During our quote, our company representative spent nearly an hour reviewing our options for any move scenario and carefully rendered an estimate.

What we don’t like

This mover often requires large upfront deposits to book. While these are refundable if you cancel at least 72 hours before your moving date, there is a 5% cancellation fee.

Services

For a long-distance moving company, Safeway doesn’t advertise many add-on service options. It offers full-service packing and 30 days of free storage with all long-distance moves but doesn’t provide many details about other services, such as crating or vehicle shipping.

Cost

We called Safeway Moving Inc. and got a cross-country moving quote for a three-bedroom home. Our move coordinator spent more than 50 minutes on the phone discussing our inventory and potential service needs. This included a full discussion about the accessibility of our old and new homes to ensure minimal hiccups on moving day. This 2,900-mile move would cost $10,333 with full-service packing included. Our deposit would be $2,000, which would be refundable if we canceled three business days before our move.

Quote type: Binding estimates

Inventory gathering: This mover offers virtual walk-throughs, video call quotes or in-person estimates.

Availability

Safeway services all 50 states.

Customer thoughts

Safeway Moving has 4.1 out of 5 stars on BBB. This includes reviews from clients who needed last-minute moving services and commercial relocation assistance. Common positives mentioned include communicative and careful moving crews and attentive booking staff.

North American Van Lines

4.6

Our thoughts

North American Van Lines (NAVL) is a moving carrier that operates more than 500 locations across all 50 states. It offers bottom-line and not-to-exceed pricing options, which are designed not to increase unless you add inventory or services to your moving package. It also offers a full range of add-ons, including packing, crating and more.

What we like

This mover’s budget-friendly pricing structures make it a quality choice for long-distance service, ensuring your move won’t cost more than estimated. NAVL also requires no upfront deposit to book, which can help you stay on budget throughout your relocation.

What we don’t like

Negative reviews report added fees with this provider. However, these instances can result from customers adding inventory or service needs after initial quotes. Even binding estimates can shift on moving day if this occurs, so it’s crucial to do an in-person inventory review and request all your needed services upfront.

Services

NAVL provides local and long-distance moving options. Its add-on offerings can depend on your exact location, but the company as a whole can provide the following:

  • Packing
  • Crating
  • Storage
  • Vehicle shipping
  • Assembly and disassembly
  • Packing supplies

Cost

We called NAVL and got a quote for long-distance service. Our move coordinator spent 20 minutes on the phone to discuss our inventory and service needs before giving us two different prices. This three-bedroom, 2,900-mile move would cost $13,450 with no add-ons and $16,757 with full-service packing included. No deposit would be required ahead of our move date.

Quote type: Binding estimates for long-distance moves and ballpark rates for local moves

Inventory gathering: NAVL offers virtual walk-throughs via video call or in-person quotes.

Availability

NAVL services all 50 states.

Customer thoughts

This carrier has 1.1 out of 5 stars on BBB. However, this doesn’t show a full picture of its quality. Just over 30 reviews contributed to this rating, and many of NAVL’s 500 locations nationwide are highly rated. These locations feature reviews that praise moving crew efficiency and responsive booking staff.

Allied Van Lines

4.6

Our thoughts

Allied Van Lines is a carrier with more than 400 locations across all 50 states. It offers binding estimates for long-distance moves and expedited service for small moves via its Allied Express packages.

What we like

Allied Van Lines has one of the largest moving networks in the country. Each location offers access to add-ons, including packing, vehicle shipping and more. Its Allied Express service plans offer full-value protection, labor and transportation for two-bedroom moves or smaller at a bottom-line cost.

What we don’t like

Negative reviews for Allied cite slow response times for damage claims and miscommunication between booking staff and moving crews. Based on the reviews we analyzed, most locations offer quality service, but communication issues can occur when dealing with any large mover.

Services

This premium local and long-distance carrier offers a full range of basic and add-on services, including the following:

  • Packing
  • Crating
  • Vehicle shipping
  • Allied Express
  • Storage options
  • Junk removal
  • Home staging

Cost

We called Allied and got a quote for a 2,900-mile, three-bedroom relocation. While our move coordinator stressed that we would need an in-person survey of our goods for binding pricing, they gave us a quick estimate in only 15 minutes. With no add-ons included, our move would cost around $12,175. Full-service packing would add $2,500. No deposit is required to book with this provider.

Quote type: Binding estimates for long-distance moves and ballpark rates for local service

Inventory gathering: Allied offers both virtual and in-person estimates.

Availability

Allied has offices in all 50 states.

Customer thoughts

Allied has 1.1 out of 5 stars on BBB, but you should read reviews for individual locations. BBB reviews mention slow response times for damage claims and added fees on moving day. However, many of its individual locations are highly rated, and customers cite excellent service for local and long-distance relocations.

Our thoughts

Consider U-Pack if you want to stage a DIY move without renting your own moving truck. It only offers long-distance service but allows you to load and unload at your own pace. Plus, it has locations in all 50 states and Canada.

What we like

U-Pack’s bottom-line pricing is easy to understand, and quotes are available in minutes online. It also provides a convenient portal for hiring local moving labor near you and has a clearly worded cancellation policy with listed fees attached for late cancellations.

What we don’t like

This container and trailer shipper only offers long-distance moving options. While its 28-foot trailer option makes it the best DIY option for large moves, you won’t be able to book it for in-town service.

Services

This container and trailer service offers two size options. Its ReloCube is ideal for single rooms or studio apartments and has approximate dimensions of 6 feet by 7 feet by 8 feet. Its moving trailer can fit most homes up to small four-bedroom houses and is 28 feet by 8 feet by 9 feet. You’ll have three-day windows for loading and unloading at your old and new homes.

Cost

If you rent a trailer from U-Pack, you’ll only pay for the space you use. We got a quote for a 1,800-mile, three-bedroom move from this provider and selected the entire trailer. You can select the number of linear feet you need in the trailer at checkout, but you’ll ultimately pay for whatever space you use. Our fee for use of the full trailer would be $8,566 with no deposit due at booking.

Quote type: Flat rate

Inventory gathering: The customer self-inventories household goods to estimate spatial requirements in trailers and ReloCubes.

Availability

U-Pack offers service to all 50 states.

Customer thoughts

This mover has 4.4 out of 5 stars on BBB. Positive reviews praised professional conduct by drivers and on-time deliveries for interstate moving needs. Negative reviews reported dirty trailers and delayed transit between each location, but this feedback was infrequent.

How do you choose a flat-rate moving company?

Choosing the right moving company can mean the difference between a stressful and a streamlined relocation. We asked Nancy Zafrani, general manager at Oz Moving & Storage, what she would tell someone seeking a moving company.

“First of all, they should only use a company that’s licensed,” she said. “They should make sure that they’re working with a moving company, not a broker.”

She continued, “The company that they’re working with should definitely be able to provide a certificate of insurance that shows proof of their general liability insurance.”

Here, we outline everything to consider before choosing a flat-rate mover.

Confirm the movers are properly licensed

All moving companies must carry licensing to legally operate and provide moving services. Any moving company offering long-distance or interstate moving options must be federally licensed.

This entails registration with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The FMCSA requires all movers to carry active United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) numbers.

You can use these numbers to look up a mover’s registration status on the FMCSA database. Beyond this, movers offering only local assistance must maintain registration with a state-level governing body.

Decide whether you need additional insurance

All moving companies must provide an option for reimbursement for lost or damaged goods. This released-value protection offers 60 cents per pound per item.

Beyond this, most movers offer full-value protection. This offers protection against damage at a higher rate. You might be covered for the entire declared worth of your shipment or at a set rate, such as $6 per pound per item.

Determine the services you need

Determine your service needs before getting a quote from any moving company. This will ensure that your flat-rate estimate is accurate.

Around eight weeks before your move date, conduct a walk-through of your home and write down all the goods you’ll be taking with you. Use this to figure out which add-on services you’ll need, such as the following:

  • Packing and unpacking services
  • Crating for antiques and fragile items
  • Short- and long-term storage
  • Home staging
  • Furniture delivery
  • Junk removal
  • Vehicle shipping
  • Assembly and disassembly

Consider the cost and get multiple quotes

Not all moving companies offer flat-rate quotes. For example, local movers that bill hourly will rarely provide binding estimates. You’ll only be eligible for flat-rate pricing if you plan a long-distance or interstate move.

When you get a quote from a professional mover, be upfront about your budgetary restrictions and get your estimate in writing. Read it thoroughly and inquire about scenarios that would induce added fees on moving day.

Note that nearly all full-service moving companies, including those listed above, will offer a virtual quote option. This will require that you schedule a video call with a moving company representative, who will then conduct a remote walk-through of your home.

Read customer reviews

Customer reviews are your most valuable resource when vetting moving companies. Read reviews from multiple platforms to gauge common praises and critiques.

If booking a move at a flat rate is your priority, avoid movers with reviews alleging hidden fees. If you’re moving with fragile items, opt for a mover that receives accolades for careful handling.

Reliable review sites include Google Reviews, Trustpilot, Yelp, Better Business Bureau (BBB) and social media sites, such as Reddit.

Final take: Start your search for a flat-rate mover with a quote from American Van Lines to stay within your budget

Any binding or flat-rate estimate will explicitly state that it will not shift unless your moving needs or inventory change between quote day and moving day. Additionally, most flat-rate movers will advertise that they offer binding estimates on their websites and will tell you during the quote process.

Get flat-rate quotes from at least three qualified moving companies to find the best rate for the services you need. We recommend American Van Lines and Safeway Moving Services Inc. American’s combination of flat-rate pricing and moving crews that average a decade of experience make it a great pick for relocation packages that include antiques and fragile items.

For flat-rate self-service moving packages, U-Pack offers the best options. Its container and trailer offerings make it suitable for most home sizes, while its “pay for what you use” pricing model allows for a transparent bottom-line cost that will not shift on moving day.

Our rating methodology for moving companies

Our moving recommendations are all backed by our detailed rating methodology. To fairly assess both interstate and local movers, we have tailored two sets of review standards for long-distance and intrastate movers.

Both sets of review standards assess factors including reputation and customer satisfaction, availability and range, services offered, pricing and quote practices and customer service. We rate each moving company out of 100 possible points. We then divide the final score by 20 to obtain the 5-star rating we feature in our reviews.

All BBB scores are accurate as of May 2024.
