Sarah Jessica Parker–and her professional alter-ego Carrie Bradshaw—possess just enough charm to convince even the most self-sacrificial of fashion naysayers to slip into a pair of crystal-encrusted Manolo Blahniks. After all, the quest for beautiful shoes are for these two a spiritual endeavour–each Hangisi pump and mismatched Dish (SJP’s own interpretation of the classic silhouette) bringing themselves closer to some sort of divine experience.

But Carrie Bradshaw is not Sarah Jessica Parker and Sarah Jessica Parker is not Carrie Bradshaw. That might explain why the actor–bundled as always in several tote bags, side bags and rucksacks–was this weekend photographed in a pair of wooden clogs while leaving her New York residence. The shoe is a little more quaint, a little more bucolic than the twinkling heels Bradshaw would so often impoverish herself in spite of. But zoom in to this paparazzi shot and you will notice that SJP also happens to be carrying a collapsible camping chair across her back–this is a woman who is clearly feeling the call of the wild, and perhaps also the Nordic countryside.

In the wake of 2023’s fascination with the divisive cork wedge–see: here, here and here for just a few examples–it would seem the humble clog might be due its own fashion reckoning. This is something the attendees of Copenhagen Fashion Week have been encouraging for a substantial amount of time, with Hermès, Stella McCartney, Molly Goddard and Acne Studios producing their own “klompen” since at least the spring 2021 season. Best to keep the milkmaid dresses at an arm’s distance though–instead take a little high-low inspiration from SJP’s tattered sweatpants and wraparound sunglasses–lest you want to be mistaken for a 19th-century Swedish farm hand.
