Key takeaways

  • Maintenance costs vary according to your Tesla model, location, and vehicle’s age

  • Aftermarket parts and third-party service can cost less, but there’s a warranty risk

  • Unlike most new cars, Tesla doesn’t require maintenance to keep its factory warranty active

There are many benefits to being a Tesla owner: long-range driving, lower emissions—and much less maintenance than on a typical gas car. You won’t pay for oil changes, transmission and radiator servicing—nor will you need to replace spark plugs, drive belts, and other common parts of internal-combustion engines.

Even better, your Tesla’s factory warranty will remain active, even if you don’t perform regular maintenance, though the use of aftermarket parts and service could put that protection at risk.

Still, Tesla vehicles require more care than just plugging it into a charger. Although the drive unit won’t need regular servicing, and the company issues ongoing over-the-air software updates, “Teslas still have some of the same basic components as traditional vehicles, which require periodic maintenance,” says Justin Cupler, former ASE-certified technician and shop manager.

In this guide, you’ll learn about recommended maintenance items, typical Tesla maintenance costs, whether to take your car to a Tesla service pro or independent shop, and how to save money.

Total cost of recommended maintenance

The total cost of performing Tesla’s recommended maintenance work on schedule averages $6201,560 per year—not including normal wear items, such as windshield wiper blades, windshield washer fluid, or brake pads. Annual costs will vary based on the model, the age of the vehicle, and where and how often you drive— and not all items have to be performed each year.

Below is a breakdown with costs. Be sure to check the maintenance schedule in your vehicle’s owner’s manual

Full tire service. Tesla tires should be rotated and balanced, and a wheel alignment performed, every 6,250 miles. Have it done sooner if premature tire wear creates a tread depth difference of more than 2/32” between any tires.

Total cost of all three services ranges from $155–375. This is based on the following individual costs: tire rotation $15–30, tire balancing $60–100, and wheel alignment $80–300.

Winter care. If you drive in cold-weather regions where road salt is used, Tesla recommends that the brake calipers be cleaned and lubricated every 12 months or 12,500 miles. This service costs $175–450

Brake fluid test. Get the brake fluid tested every two years for contamination and replaced if necessary. The test is inexpensive–less than $20—but if the system needs flushing, it’ll cost $90–200. If you tow with the vehicle, the brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years, regardless of test results.

Cabin air filter replacement. Over time, these filters become clogged and lose their ability to keep dust, pollen, and other impurities out of the cabin. They should be replaced every 2 years on the Tesla Model 3, 2012-2020 Model S and Model X, and Model Y (the one without a HEPA filter). The service costs $150–250.

Teslas built in 2021, and later Model S and Model X vehicles, as well as some Model Y cars, come with a high-efficiency HEPA filter, which should be replaced every 3 years. This service costs $100–260. This also applies to earlier S and X models that have received a HEPA filter upgrade.

Air-conditioning service. Replacing the A/C desiccant bag, which absorbs moisture that may have gotten into the system, optimizes the longevity of the air conditioner. This is relatively inexpensive at $60–100. Tesla recommends performing it at the following intervals:

  • 2012-2020 Model S and Model X: Every 2 years

  • 2021 and later Model S and Model X: Every 3 years

  • Model Y: Every 4 years

  • Model 3: Every 6 years

Cost factors

Tesla maintenance costs are affected by two primary factors:

  • Tesla model differences: The maintenance parts, and labor to replace them, varies by model. “Don’t assume just because the Model X and Model S are the most expensive Tesla models that they’ll cost the most to maintain,” says Cupler. “Sometimes, the labor to replace one part on a Model Y could be higher than on the Model X, making it cost more.”

  • Local labor rates: Repair costs differ greatly between regions. If you live in an area with higher rates, such as California, it will affect the overall cost.

How to save money

Here are a few ways to save money on Tesla maintenance costs:

  • Tesla Maintenance Plan: Although the plan was discontinued in 2019, if your Tesla car is covered under an old 3- or 4-year plan you could pay little to nothing for your upcoming maintenance. Check your sales paperwork to see if you paid the upfront maintenance fee.

  • Skip the Tesla Service Center: Maintenance costs can be reduced by using less-expensive aftermarket parts and independent repair shops that work on electric cars. Call a few highly-rated repair shops and check Tesla internet forums for recommended facilities. Verify they handle work on your Tesla model and check their pricing. According toTesla, “Coverage under your warranty could be affected if any problems occur.” For that reason, it may be prudent to delay third-party servicing until after your warranty expires.

  • Avoid premature tire wear: As mentioned, Tesla recommends servicing tires  whenever tread depth varies by more than 2/32”. You can get the most from your tires, and lower overall cost of ownership, by avoiding aggressive driving, monitoring wheel alignment if you feel any abnormal vibrations, and regularly checking tire pressure. Tesla says, “Under-inflation is the most common cause of tire failures.”

FAQs

Do I need to go to the dealership for maintenance to keep my Tesla warranty valid?

No, having your new Tesla serviced at a third-party repair facility doesn’t directly impact the basic or powertrain warranties. An exception could be if a problem arises from incorrect service.

Do I have to complete Tesla’s recommended maintenance to retain my warranty?

No, Tesla’s recommended maintenance won’t affect your new vehicle limited warranty or used car warranty. However, it could affect an extended service agreement, as an extended service contract is under the rules of the company offering the contract. Check the details of your extended warranty.

Can I do my own Tesla maintenance to save money?

Yes, Tesla permits owners to perform recommended maintenance. But items like tire balancing and air-conditioning service require specialized training and equipment.
