‘Under The Silver Lake’
Director David Robert Mitchell’s 2014 feature It Follows was a surprise indie horror smash, racking up a 96% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing over $27 million (on a budget of only $2MM). His follow-up, the Los Angeles stoner noir Under The Silver Lake, followed a completely different trajectory. After a disastrous screening at Cannes in 2019, Mitchell fought with his distributor A24, who all but gave up on the film’s commercial prospects. That said, don’t make the mistake of writing it off. Andrew Garfield stars in this fantastic, ambitious, and lovably flawed film that contains echoes The Big Lebowski, The Long Goodbye, and Mulholland Drive.
