Enough with the covers already

Can we please have fewer covers on all legs of the upcoming tour? I buy Pearl Jam tickets to hear Pearl Jam songs. One or two covers is okay, but last few tours it’s been more like 5-7 covers per show — at the expense of classics like Dissident, Hail Hail, In Hiding, and so many more. Plus I’m looking forward to hearing the Dark Matter stuff too…

Not very hopeful for this after the end of the Zane interview. One is definitely plenty.

They only did two at each of the Chicago shows last year. I thought they cut back on the covers that tour.

I always skip RITFW on bootlegs. They have so many songs that would be great closers. But they’re gonna play what they want. It is what it is.

I used to be all in on the covers but now with the shorter setlists and 12 records I don’t want many covers to take the spot of so many possibilities of PJ songs. If they were still playing 32 songs a night I would love to hear Comfortably Numb or some other cool covers but now with 25 songs max and a new album I just want Pearl Jam.

While it was a bummer the setlists got so much shorter the past couple years, in doing so they really seem to have cut back on covers more than anything, so not really sure what you're even talking about at this point...

I like a cover or two, but not ones I have heard a million times before. I hope SO much that they retire RITFW!!!! A new surprising cover would be fun.

I'd say more Neil Young covers. But less RITFW.

It could be way worse - Look at Incubus. 17 songs a night and 2 covers. I think 2-3 covers, among 25-26 songs are alright. At this point RITFW and Baba have become like Pearl Jam songs anyway. I consider them part of the programme as much as Yellow Ledbetter and Alive.

The first thing I think Mike mentioned Can't Keep and it was real exciting, then the rest of them talked about covers. Oh well.

I feel the same way. I'd throw Leaving Here in there too if we were having this conversation 20 years ago, but they've only played it six times in the past decade.

I'm fine never hearing Pink Floyd ever again.

I'm fine with Baba or Rockin' they've been doing them for so long they're staples like Black or GTF.

Are the Mirrorball songs considered covers?

  • kmcmanuskmcmanus Posts: 695
Mirrorball, Temple, Love Bone or Into the Wild era EV I don’t really think of as covers. But that’s about it. So to me, I’m the Ocean or Setting Forth is fine, but Down By the River or Invincible would count as covers and I could kinda do without them. All that said, the band should play whatever makes them excited to perform so who am I to tell them what to skip?

I would add Crazy Mary to that list. And Chloe/Crown as well. And I could do without RITFW too but that at least gives me a head start on getting out of the venue before everyone else.

I feel the same way.  I like learning about different songs/bands from what PJ covers.  I get there isn't a lot of variety, but if they dig it, then good for them.

They're increasing the number of songs in their studio catalog and reducing the total length of their concerts.  I agree, I'd rather them do their own songs rather than covers.  I'm a year or two older than the band members and totally understand the shorter sets.  I like mountain biking and even when trying to keep in shape, it's a lot harder to maintain all the stamina.  For me, RITFW, I feel it's a party on the stage and they're having fun, but I'm really not.  I'm not heading for the car on the hope there will be something afterwards.  As for the shorter sets, I hope it won't be 45% Ten, 45% Dark Matter, 10% smattering of other.  I hope for a lot of Dark Matter, and even in its entirety, but for the rest, an even distribution across the catalog.  On the Gigaton tour, I saw too heavy weight on Ten.  The stuff in-between is pretty damn good.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

Covers are usually just in the encore. Let them have fun. They could just skip the Encore.

I can't say I've studied the setlist stats since they've gone to the shorter sets, but it seems the way they've shortened the sets has been to scale back on the covers immensely.

The show I saw in Austin last tour had one (1). It was Baba, as the show closer. Everything else was an original, including Out of My Mind (!!!).
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
