Lisa Frankenstein is alive! Kinda...with 2nd place, $3.8M opening behind Argylle at box office

That early February box office continues its journey on the struggle bus.

The first couple months of the year are a real rough time for movie distributors, still coming off the high of the holiday season and trying to capitalize on that awards season bump. And this weekend was no different.

For the second week in a row, Argylle, the twisty-turny, star-studded spy thriller from Apple, tops the box office, earning a not-so-thrilling $6.5 million, to bring its domestic haul to $28.8 million, as per Comscore.

Internationally, the Matthew Vaughn film took fifth place (with $9.4 million), behind four entries from China, to bring its global, two-week cume to $60.1 million, against its reported $200 million budget.

In second place domestically, we have Lisa Frankenstein, written by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody (Juno), about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. The horror comedy earned $3.8 million in its debut weekend.

“I've always wanted to make a movie that reminded me of the moment I got to enjoy House of Wax [in theaters] on opening weekend," director  Zelda Williams told EW. "I hope people get to have that [experience] in the theater.”

In third place, the Jason Statham thriller The Beekeeper has lost its sting in its fifth week, bringing in $3.5 million domestically, for a total gross, so far, of $54.7 million. Fourth belongs to the Christian historical drama TV series The Chosen Season 4, Episodes 1-3, which earned $3.2 million in its second week of release, for a total of $12.6 million.

And rounding out the top 5 is good old Wonka. In its ninth week of release, the Willy Wonka prequel added another $3.1 million to its domestic take, bringing that to $205.3 million. Globally, the musical is singing a pretty tune to $587.6 million.
