Hugh Grant says he's not doing a third 'Bridget Jones'

Daniel Cleaver doesn't have a track record of being particularly reliable—and Bridget Jones shouldn't count on him for a third film, as Hugh Grant said he won't be in one.

"The book's excellent, by the way, but the script is completely different—or the script as I last saw it a few years ago," Grant said in a Free Radio interview. "And in the end I decided not to do it. But I think they are going to go ahead and do it without Daniel."

A third Bridget Jones film has been a long time coming. EW reported that Working Title Films was going ahead on a third film back in 2011, but the future of the franchise seemed less certain in early 2012 when problems with the script led to a production delay. At that point, Grant's reps issued a statement saying that "Hugh is keen that Bridget Jones 3 happens, but Renee, Colin and he all have some issue with the present script. They are hoping to help work them out." This all came before Helen Fielding published a third novel, which features Bridget as a mother of two, widowed after the death of Mark Darcy (played by Colin Firth in the films).

Grant's comments come as The Sun reported that Emma Thompson has been enlisted to work on the movie's script.

Working Title Films and Universal did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
