Sarah Jessica Parker’s couture-obsessedalter ego Carrie Bradshaw would be the first to tell you that fashion is cyclical. And so, it seems, are rumors of a third Sex and the City movie, the notion of which goes in and out of style like animal print or high-waisted jeans.

On Thursday, the actress and shoe purveyor addressed the prospect of Sex and the City 3 head on, and it sounds as though diehard fans of the franchise shouldn’t hold their breaths. When asked by the TODAY show‘s Matt Lauer what the “final decision” was on the hypothetical sequel, Parker said, “There is no decision.”

She continued, “It remains a not-often-had conversation. I know — and [writer-director] Michael Patrick [King] knows well — the story we might tell, if we ever tell it. But the real truth, and I’m not being cagey, is we’ve not discussed a when.”

Pressed further whether SATC 3 is on the front burner, back burner, or no burner at all, she added, “There’s no oven. … It’s such a hard question to answer because everybody reads and projects so much into what I say. There is a story. When and if we tell it remains unknown.”

And yet, a glimmer of hope remains for the SATC faithful. King, who executive produced the series and directed the two films, told EW last year, “It’s all really about the stories, and if you actually think you have something left to say that would make it exciting and worthwhile for the fans’ time, that’s really the question. … It’s really like, is there enough or more to say that would justify people risking seeing their favorite characters again? And I think there’s one chapter left.”
