Fans of the 1999 sci-fi film Galaxy Quest almost got a sequel. Sam Rockwell, who played Guy Fleegman, revealed the news on Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist podcast, and production would’ve been underway as we speak. Sadly, these dreams were put on hold following the death of Alan Rickman.

“They were going to do a sequel on Amazon,” Rockwell said. “We were ready to sign up, and [then] Alan Rickman passed away and Tim Allen wasn’t available – he has a show – and everybody’s schedule was all weird. It was going to shoot, like, right now. And how do you fill that void of Alan Rickman? That’s a hard void to fill.”

One of Rickman’s most beloved roles was Alexander Dane on Galaxy Quest, about a group of veteran actors from a beloved sci-fi show who are mistaken for the real deal by an alien race. EW learned last year that a TV series based on the film had landed at Amazon, though it was in its early stages and it’s unclear whether this sequel project was linked to it.

When asked in 2013 about hope for a sequel of some kind, Rickman said, “They’d need a few zimmer frames.”

You know what they say… Never give up. Never surrender.
