ABC renews Dr. Ken, orders Notorious, Imaginary Mary

ABC will make sure there is a doctor in the house again next season. Along with some criminal lawyers and an imaginary friend.

The network has renewed Dr. Ken for a second season. The family/medical comedy starring Ken Jeong has averaged 6.1 million viewers per episode and a 1.4 rating in the 18-to-49 demo.

In pickup news, ABC ordered Notorious, a drama inspired by the true-life stories of criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos and cable news producer Wendy Walker. Written and executive-produced by Josh Berman (Blacklist) and Allie Hagan (Suri’s Burn Book), with The Firm’s Josh Barry also serving as executive producer, the series is billed as “a provocative look at the unique, sexy, and dangerous interplay of criminal law and the media.” The cast includes Covert Affairs star Piper Perabo, Friday Night Lights vet Aimee Teegarden, and Rescue Me‘s Daniel Sunjata, as well as Sepideh Moafi, Kate Jennings Grant, Ryan Guzman, Kevin Zegers, and J. August Richards.

The network also ordered Imaginary Mary, a live-action/CGI series starring Dharma & Greg vet Jenna Elfman as an independent career woman who falls in love with a divorced father of three. The dramatic change in her life gets even more interesting when the “slightly unhinged” imaginary childhood friend suddenly resurfaces to guide her through this critical juncture. The CGI imaginary friend will be voiced by SNL alum Rachel Dratch. Mary also stars Stephen Schneider, Nicholas Coombe, Matreya Scarrwener, and Erica Trembay.

The show comes courtesy of The Goldbergs‘ Adam F. Goldberg and David Guarascio, who are serving as writers and executive producers. Shawn Levy directed the pilot and is also an executive producer.
