In last year’s season 2 finale of You’re the Worst, Gretchen (Aya Cash) and Jimmy (Chris Geere) finally said “I love you” to each other. So, is it all smooth sailing for our reprobate couple in the FXX sitcom’s third run of shows?

“The third season jumps off from where we left them,” says creator and showrunner Stephen Falk. “Which is — having gone through Gretchen being in the throws of clinical depression — they got to the place of saying ‘I love you’ to each other for the first time, which was a very small moment, and yet impactful, I think, for a couple. The first time you say ‘I love you,’ it’s scary. So, we’re really playing out the b-side of that, the result of having taken this big emotional step forward. At the end of season 1, they moved in together, which was a big physical step forward, so now we see them in a big emotional step forward and we’re going to see the fallout.”

In the season 3 premiere, part of that fallout involves Jimmy’s realization that there are a lot of things he doesn’t know about Gretchen. “Basically, Jimmy and Gretchen have said ‘I love you’ to each other, and have woken up the next morning after saying it, and at least one of them, if not both, are freaked out by having taken this step,” explains Falk. “In discussing it, Jimmy has learned a very small detail about Gretchen, which is that, when she showers, she does not wash her legs. It’s a very insignificant detail but it’s something that, for him, is symbolic of the fact that he said ‘I love you’ to this person and there’s so many things he does not know about her. So, they’re having drinks at a bar during the day — as they do — and he’s spinning out about what else doesn’t he know about her. And Gretchen is all to happy to reveal weird details about herself.”

Like?

“Like she used to date two of the Baldwins and that she was almost killed by an owl.”

Season 3 of You’re the Worst premieres on FXX on Aug. 31.
