Song of the Summer 2016: Drake's One Dance takes the prize

The Song of the Summer has officially been chosen, thanks to Billboard‘s Songs of the Summer chart, which has crowned Drake’s “One Dance” with the coveted title.

According to Billboard, the chart tracks the “most popular hits based on cumulative performance on the weekly Hot 100 chart from Memorial Day to Labor Day.” Drizzy’s single, which debuted in April, led that chart for 14 weeks this summer.

Drake released “One Dance” and “Pop Style” at the same time, just a few weeks before releasing studio album Views, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. “One Dance” first topped the Hot 100 back in May, a week before Memorial Day, and stayed in the chart’s top 10 for the entire summer, the trade reports.

Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” comes in just behind the Toronto rapper at No. 2 on the Songs of the Summer chart, though it was the best selling song between Memorial Day and Labor Day with 1.28 million downloads. The Chainsmokers’s “Don’t Let Me Down” featuring Daya landed at No. 3 and Sia’s “Cheap Thrills,” her first No. 1 hit, clocked in at No. 4. Calvin Harris and Rihanna’s “This is What You Came For” rounded out the top 5.

Spotify and Google Play also named Drake’s “One Dance” Song of the Summer according to their own data. “Drake’s ‘One Dance’ is impossibly catchy and by late spring had positioned itself as the one to beat,” Shanon Cook, Spotify’s music trends expert, said in a statement.

Early in the summer, EW asked stars like Tegan and Sara and the Chainsmokers to weigh in on potential songs of the summer, and when asked about Drake’s “One Dance,” there were mixed results. “I’m the biggest Drake fan on planet Earth, but this is the only song of Drake’s we still don’t get,” Alex Pall of the Chainsmokers said. “It’s probably the one I know least about, but I’m glad Sara [Quinn] likes it,” Tegan Quin of Tegan and Sara said.
