Austin Butler volunteers to be Drew Barrymore's 'get out of here free' phone call on blind date

The "Masters of the Air" star is ace wingman on and off screen.

Austin Butler isn't just a master of the air — he's also the master of a good exit strategy.

In a Drew Barrymore Show preview clip released Tuesday, the Masters of the Air star personally volunteered to be Drew Barrymore's "get out of here free" phone call for her upcoming blind date. As Barrymore admitted to Butler and his costar Callum Turner, she was feeling quite nervous about embarking on her "first date in a long time."

When Turner asked what she and her date were planning to do, Barrymore revealed, "First of all, the gentleman offered to pick me up, which I was so bowled over by I was like, 'Sure! That's a gentlemanly thing to do.' And then we were going to go all the way downtown to this long dinner. Everyone says when you go on a date with someone, don’t do the dinner, do a drink, but I don't know better!"

Butler, who is currently dating Kaia Gerber, is also pro-dinner date. "Then you know if it doesn't work," he explained. "You get to actually talk. And yeah, you're gonna have a great time."

But Barrymore wasn't so sure. "What if you get weird vibes right out of the gate though," she said. "Then what?"

"Then run," quipped Turner, who is dating Dua Lipa. Butler then elaborated: "Yeah, you go to the bathroom and you call a friend and you have them give you a surprise call."

"Can you do that?" Barrymore asked. Butler, as it turns out, was absolutely down to be Barrymore's wingman for the night, adding, "I'll be your friend."

"I'm not kidding!" She replied. "I get very nervous and I've never met this person before. He's a complete stranger."

When Turner asked if she'd been set up on a blind date, Barrymore sheepishly replied, "If meeting on a dating app is a blind date?"

Butler then teased that he "can't wait to get updates" on the evening from Barrymore.

"Please be my 'get out of here free' call," she told Butler, to which he responded, "Yeah, just send me a text and I'll call."
