Accelerating Careers in Real Estate Podcast

Real Estate

A podcast on the topic of accelerating your career, learning from CEOs, Founders and Rising Stars of Real Estate

About us

Nick Carman is Partnership Director at Macdonald and Company. In this podcast, he explores a theory he has built after 15 years in recruiting in real estate, interviewing more than 1000 industry professionals. We ALL, when we enter our chosen career, accelerate; we learn and develop quickly… but this period of acceleration eventually slows and we reach a period of consolidation. But what if, during this period of consolidation, we could unlock something that would allow us to regain the same pace of acceleration we first experienced and continue to grow? Nick talks with industry experts to find out.

Updates

  • Well we set out to take the lessons shared in the Accelerating Careers in Real Estate Podcast to a live audience... I think we bloody nailed it! Thank you to Peter Joaki, Hebe Mottershead Davies, Rebecca Ogunmodede, Oliver Hardwick, Lawrence Owho and Catalina Chivite for their support in coming up with the idea as part of our Early Careers Council, our mentors, mentees and the unwavering support of Macdonald & Company. During the night our mentors gave up their fancy titles to help remove anxiety for the mentees and encourage those mentees to discover people outside of their usual community. The result was a room filled with real estate professionals learning about the opportunities, challenges and skills necessary to succeed. Be easily inspired.... This was one of the most memorable moments of my conversation with Will Bax, when he and I sat down to hear his story as part of the Accelerating Careers in Real Estate Podcast back in the autumn of 2020. So, I couldn't wait to bring some of my favourite moments from this conversation to a new audience in our ESPRESSO editions. Will was the #CEO of Retirement Villages Group Ltd and answering my question on how does he know when he reaches his comfort zone. Learning = Acceleration in your career. You can catch the short and long-form episode on your favourite #podcast channel. Thank you to the continued support by Macdonald & Company

What was the most important lesson learnt from Steve Morgan, Tony Pidgely and Dan Labbad? I get to ask this question to Rob Heasman, CEO of The Earls Court Development Company in our latest Accelerating Careers in Real Estate Podcast episode. Rob had the good fortune to build his career under some of the best-known leaders of our industry as he rose through the ranks with Redrow, Berkeley Group Plc and Lendlease. He now has the same job and title as they did, leading a company in pursuing successful development, so I had to ask him what he learnt from them. What is the secret to a happy and successful career? Well, I got to dive back in to one of my favourite Accelerating Careers in Real Estate Podcast episodes with Gary McLuskey, Managing Director, Global Design for Greystar. He and I sat down in the autumn of 2020 to hear his career story, told by an expert story teller! This is a snippet of the last question I asked Gary which was what had been his biggest lesson learnt in this career, and for him it was the importance of time and being proud of what he was involved in. • What questions aren't being asked/answered in the DE&I agenda? As part of preparation for our 125th episode I want to put your questions to the champions of the diversity, equity and inclusion agenda in real estate. So far I've got: 1. How bright is the future for the newest entrants from under represented groups in our industry? 2. Who are the leaders, who is setting the best example others can emulate? 3. Are the penalties for micro-aggression in the workforce a deterrent? 4. Does AI have a role to play in removing bias to hiring and promotional decisions?

How to turn THREATS to CAREER OPPORTUNITIES In our latest ESPRESSO version of Accelerating Careers in Real Estate Podcast, my guest James Pellatt tells a story that in 2016 he was given the reins to address the disruption to the commercial real estate sector by his then-CEO. It's a brilliant lesson on how our guests create careers by leading the pack, not following. One of the recurring themes of our guests on the podcast is this ability to create their own opportunities, from the outside they appear to take huge swings, giant leaps into the unknown, massive gambles. They see opportunities most of us never see, let alone willing to make. Yet here James puts it beautifully that we an either wither in the face of challenges and remain in our lane OR we can embrace them and he puts himself forward to lead such a conversation. So if you are no longer learning in your role, if it feels all to comfortable, try the exercise of looking at the threats and see if there are opportunities to #learn and #grow. "We had no revenue, no staff no processes... but we built a £2bn REIT" So often our guests, astound me with the "risks" they are willing to take, the seeming leaps of faith - but what if they see something the rest of us don't? Could we improve our vision, like popping on a pair of specs? This is a snippet from the conversation I had with Neil Young, Investment Chair of Young back in 2020 when he kindly shared his career story. Pay attention to how he breaks down the solutions to launching a REIT In this ESPRESSO episode of Accelerating Careers in Real Estate, Neil recounts his early career moves, making real estate a career not a hobby, the inception of Young London, and the establishment of the £2 billion REIT, Get Living.
